Our Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) International Study Centre is looking for a Welfare Officer to work with the academic and student experience teams to create and sustain a high level of attendance and study engagement at the International Study Centre (ISC).

Implementing strategies for engagement and supporting cohorts of students who are identified as at risk of not achieving the relevant progression requirements for their chosen programme at LJMU.

To ensure each student has access to relevant, timely and accurate student welfare information, advice and guidance and working with individual students who require welfare support.

This person will also support the DDSL (deputy designated safeguarding lead) on safeguarding cases as and when appropriate.


ABOUT THE ROLE

  • To monitor student attendance and follow the attendance protocols for both Study Group and Home Office/UKVI.
  • To contact absent students and liaise with parents, agents, and sponsors where necessary and in accordance with Study Group policies and expectations.
  • To work with caseloads of students who have poor attendance to agree and implement actions and monitoring arrangements and put strategies in place to improve their engagement in conjunction with ISC management.
  • Provide updates to the student experience team (SET) and agree to followup actions in relation to 'at risk' students.
  • To provide pastoral care and coaching to students with welfare and health issues, advising accordingly and maintaining accurate student records, in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
  • To work with the Student Experience Officer to develop and deliver sessions to students on a range of themes to encourage wellbeing and engagement with all aspects of the student experience.
  • To hold proactive discussions with the academic team and management in relation to student welfare and safeguarding issues.
  • To support university disciplinary hearings as the ISC representative when necessary.
  • To act as a point of contact and liaison for the College Guardians and all under18 students.
  • Act as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) or support the DDSL in keeping accurate records of any safeguarding incidents, and work with the DSL to ensure national and Study Group policy is adhered to and frequently reviewed.
  • To promote and safeguard the welfare of students, with regard to those under 18's.
  • To foster productive relationships with the student body and staff.
  • To provide support with ISC extracurricular and social events and attend as required.
  • Contribute to the collaborative and empathetic working style at the centre and promote a cohesive work ethic.
  • Share best practices and contribute to the bank of effective resources/ideas/activities for welfare and pastoral support.

ABOUT YOU

  • Level 3 Qualification, or equivalent (Desirable)
  • Experience working in a student support setting, ideally with international students, or another similar setting (Essential)
  • Experience in providing advice and guidance to others (Essential)
  • Experience and understanding of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students (Essential)
  • Experience and understanding of compliance requirements in an academic setting (Desirable)
  • Experience in record keeping in adherence to GDPR regulations and processing confidential information.
