We are looking for a positive, practical and experienced individual to provide supervision and leadership to our Small Animals' Team.

Reporting to the Head of Animal Welfare, you will be able to lead by example, participating in daily animal care and cleaning routines, caseworking and dealing with intake and adoption enquiries.

You will also be responsible for the department's budget, preparing reports and staff appraisals and ensuring all animal records are maintained.

This is a temporary role to provide maternity cover with a contract length of 1 year.


Main responsibilities of the Role


The primary purpose of this role is to provide supervision and leadership to the Small Animal Team and ensure that the welfare of the animals in their care is maintained to a high standard.

The role is a hands-on role and will work closely with our veterinary partners to ensure that care and treatment reflects industry best-practice.

You will manage the Intake of cats and dogs to the charity and oversee their subsequent rehoming.


Reporting directly to the Head of Animal Welfare you will be responsible for your department's budget, reporting and staff appraisals and record keeping.

You will be expected to demonstrate evidence-based decision-making and to undertake appropriate CPD to maintain up-to-date knowledge.


You must be committed to maximizing the effectiveness and reputation of the Charity through highly professional standards of conduct, team-working and customer service at all times and be proactively supportive of colleagues and inter-departmental working.


As part of the role the post holder will also be involved in the rehoming process, caseworking animals as part of the team.


Main Duties

  • You will lead and motivate a small team of animal care and rehoming staff, prioritise their work, arrange CPD and keep them informed about developments across the Charity.
  • You will set and maintain standards and procedures for intake ensuring a smooth and kind transition for both animals and relinquishers.
  • Working collaboratively with Community and Volunteering you will develop and maintain an effective fostering service for the Charity to ensure internal animals are able to access fostering when needed.
  • You will liaise with veterinary partners and behavioural colleagues to ensure that animals on intake have full veterinary and behaviour assessments and receive the care they need on arrival at Oak Tree.
  • You will assign caseworkers to all intake animals.
  • You will liaise with the Behaviour and Training team to ensure intake behavioural assessments are conducted as required and that all training plans are updated and applicable.
  • You will adhere with all instructions, policies and best practice in respect of health, safety and hygiene in the working and animal environments, and in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other associated regulations currently in force.
  • You will be responsible for ordering and inventory of all animal food, litter and all medications, selecting cost effective sources and quantities to minimise expense. This includes reporting to liaising with representatives of corporate sponsors and partners.
  • You will ensure that animals travelling for offsite veterinary treatment are scheduled and transported efficiently and safely, liaising with other staff as required.
  • You will provide an exceptional level of customer service to all members of the public that engage with the Charity in whatever context, being polite, positive, friendly and informative at all times.
  • You will be responsible for the induction, training and ongoing support of volunteers within the small animal department.
  • You will ensure and maintain accurate paper and electronic records are kept including admission, adoption, veterinary and financial.
  • You will ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, statutory obligations and best practice.
  • You will contribute proactively to the development and improvement of policies, practices, methods and standards at the Charity.
