Job summary:


The High Containment Microbiology department at UKHSA Colindale is looking for an individual to assist in ensuring the day-to-day compliance of the HCM Containment level 2, 3 and 4 laboratories with all Health and Safety requirements, local procedures and other relevant standards, guidance and instructions to be necessary and applicable to the operation of the laboratories.

The individual is also required to assist and support with day-to-day laboratory work to enable delivery of reference and development outputs as required. The ability to work closely and effectively in a team is an essential requirement for this role.

Job description:


The post holder will be expected to fulfil any training and security clearance requirements of the post. Occasional travel between UKHSA Colindale and UKHSA Porton is expected.

While registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is not an essential requirement for this role, the department will support individuals wishing to pursue registration as a Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist

The post-holder will work as part of a small team to assist and support with day-to-day laboratory work to ensure the day-to-day compliance of the HCM Containment level 2, 3 and 4 laboratories and to enable delivery of reference and development outputs as required.**
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure H&S and Quality requirements and checks for all HCM laboratories are completed to the required schedule.
  • Liaise with Technical Manager and HCM team, to coordinate equipment maintenance, and any requirements to ensure the continual running of the laboratories.
  • Assist the HCM team to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies and methods where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.
  • Assist in the maintenance and provision of cell culture to ensure HCM work requirements are met.
  • Assist in the management and maintenance of cell culture inventories and stocks stored in the Liquid nitrogen archive.
  • Take responsibility for the control and procurement of general stock reagents and consumables for the HCM laboratories and ensure management of such complies with quality standard requirements.
  • Ensure goods and services for HCM are procured in a timely manner.
  • Ensure HCM laboratories are maintained to a high standard and safe for work
  • Participate in a range of activities and assays required for the delivery of diagnostic/surveillance services and associated assay developments
  • Maintain records all activities as appropriate to ensure compliance with all quality or scientific development standards and requirements as needed
  • Supply data to agreed timescales to meet requirements of audit, preparation of reports, presentations, and publications
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade
  • To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with the UKHSA Code of Safety Practice and to work within any Quality Systems that are applicable to the site
  • To maintain health and safety competence to the national occupational standard 'Make sure your actions reduce risks to health and safety' (NOS HSS1)
  • To fulfil the requirements of UKHSA Values and Behaviours commensurate with grade

Person specification:


Essential:


  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification or experience in Biological Sciences
  • Experience in a diagnostic or research laboratory
  • Some experience of methods relevant to diagnostic virology (e.g. cell culture, virus growth and titration, PCR and/or serology)
  • Experience of working to laboratory quality standards (e.g. ISO9001)
  • Willing to undertake security clearance and/or vaccinations as required
  • Ability to work effectively in a small team
  • Ability to work independently and to organise/prioritise work without supervision
  • Adept at problem solving
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships
