At North West Anglia NHS Trust, we are looking to develop our anaesthesia care team by introducing the newly created role of Anaesthesia Associates.


As a Trainee Anaesthesia Associate, you will be enrolled for a 2 year MSc in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Science course delivered by University College London (UCL) while we will teach you practical clinical skills under Consultant supervision at Peterborough City Hospital.

Your training will combine academic learning with the acquisition of practical skills in the clinical environment.

The course requires approximately 20 hours of academic work per week plus 20 hours per week of skills training under the direct supervision of a consultant anaesthetist.


During training and following qualification, you will be an integral part of the anaesthesia team, delivering care to patients under the direction of a named consultant anaesthetist.

Trainee Anaesthesia Associates assume an increasing range of responsibilities during the course of their training as their competency and skills increase and duties include the following:


  • The preoperative assessment of patients, including collection and evaluation of patient information, discussing risk and obtaining consent for anaesthesia
  • Preparation of the theatre environment for anaesthesia
  • Planning and delivery of an individualised anaesthetic care plan for patients under the direction of a consultant anaesthetist
  • Peripheral intravenous cannulation
  • Induction, maintenance and reversal of anaesthesia
  • Airway management basic and advanced
  • Conduct of spinal anaesthesia
  • Arterial line insertion
  • Central venous catheterisation
  • Ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia techniques
  • Positioning of patients
  • Administration of medicines
  • Administration of intravenous fluids
  • Postoperative assessment, management of pain and problems in the recovery area
  • Accurate & legible documentation of care

  • To works within the limits of their own competence under the direction of a named consultant anaesthetist who retains overall clinical responsibility for patient care.
  • To seek the assistance of their named supervising consultant or other more experienced or qualified practitioner.
  • Professional regulation for the role will lie with the Medical Director.
  • Subject to consultation and the required legislation the General Medical Council (GMC) have been asked to assume the regulation of Anaesthesia Associates, which is anticipated to occur in 2024 at the earliest.
  • To contribute to the department of anaesthesia education programme.
  • Once qualified, AAs are encouraged to join the Association of Anaesthesia Associates which provides support and ongoing education tailored to AAs.
  • To provide clinical services in line with the Trust's clinical governance arrangements.
  • To participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department of anaesthesia.
