Description

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

About the Role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Bioinformatician to join our Experimental Cancer Genetics group led by David Adams on a permanent contract.

About Us:

We aim to identify cancer genes and to understand their function using approaches such as large-scale sequencing and genome editing.

We are also interested in how genes interact to promote cancer development, and how these interactions may be exploited for therapy.

Examples of recent studies include the deep saturation genome editing of cancer genes to facilitate the identification of germline cancer predisposing alleles, and large-scale combinatorial CRISPR screens to define synthetic lethal interactions.

We are also performing large-scale sequencing of rare skin tumours, and as part of a cross-species project, we are sequencing thousands of tumours from both dogs and cats, which were collected as part of their clinical care with the aim of identifying cancer causing exposures.

The group is a mixture of pure wetlab, mixed wet/dry lab students and postdocs; with the informatics team that you will lead currently including a Principal Software Developer, another Principal Bioinformatician, a Senior Bioinformatician and two Bioinformatician which you will line manage.

Key Responsibilities of the role:

  • Defining requirements for Experimental Cancer Genetics Group and developing software tools to meet these requirements, making changes where appropriate.
  • Providing timeline estimations for defined product delivery and plan and organise own work to meet the agreed deadlines
  • Seeking new software technology and techniques that can support various projects in the team
  • Supporting the Informatics team and line managing 2 bioinformaticians
  • Influencing other developers on technical points and advances

About You:

You have good communication skills and be able to understand the scientific background and technical detail of the team's projects.

You will be proficient at devising and implementing software solutions and statistical analysis and balancing expectations.

You will have the opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary team and to work across the Institute to support technological advances.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to demonstrate your software/programming skills and contribute to science in cancer research.

Essential Skills:

  • A degree or further degree related to biology/genetics/computer science ideally at PhD level or equivalent experience
  • Strong programming skills
  • Experience of working with Git
  • Experience of other languages and development tools such as Java, Python, and SQL

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people from a wide variety of disciplines
  • Ability to understand new scientific processes via communication with laboratory scientists
  • Ability to develop collaborations with internal and external groups
  • Excellent, broad based and selfreliant problemsolving skills
