Job Summary


Reporting to a Senior Commercial Lead you will work with them in leading and providing professional expertise to refine, develop and implement best in class Commercial strategies for NHS Blood & Transplant.


You will lead, manage and be accountable for designated Commercial Team Colleagues ensuring that all resources are commercially focussed on delivering sustainable, innovative Commercial solutions, in compliance with legislation, with the drive and vision to deliver against demanding savings targets.


You will contribute towards increasing savings for NHSBT; delivering year on year cash releasing and cost avoidance savings via category management and strategic opportunities, leading strategic sourcing, supplier rationalisation, service redesign, procurement strategy, and supplier and contract management to drive quality and value for NHSBT.


You will lead, actively engage and collaborate with internal stakeholders, suppliers, other public sector bodies to embed the Commercial strategy and you will develop effective partnerships, with the aim of improving customer satisfaction and engagement to ensure the needs of differing customers are identified and met.


Main duties of the job

  • Delivering value for money contracts and associated cash savings as well as managing and leading designated Commercial Team Colleagues to provide strategic input influencing a multimillion pound spend across NHSBT.
  • Defining and managing key supplier relationships including technical input to negotiations on strategically significant contracts and negotiation and management of suppliers.
  • Providing specialist advice, guidance, and service on Commercial practices to NHSBT departments; leading in the identification, assessment and management of potential risks associated with differing sourcing strategies.
  • Providing legal advice to departments and ensuring that legal challenges to the Commercial process are minimised.
  • Ensuring that the professional development needs of Commercial Colleagues are identified, met and maintained.
  • Managing and providing input into the overall Commercial cost centre budget.
  • Responding to internal audit reviews and accountable for implementing action plans.
  • Communicating and providing complex Commercial information to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Producing written reports and presentations to the Commercial Director, Director of Finance, SMT's, Executive, Chief Executive and Board on key Commercials.
  • Planning and organising sessions with internal customers to identify Commercial opportunities to lead to improvements in supply chain, donor care and cost reduction whilst maintaining or improving quality.
  • Inputting to Commercial policy and service development, including devising new policies, and working practices to ensure legal compliance and performance against KPIs.
  • Improving and reinforcing Commercial's profile and recognition within the internal customer community via training and awareness and influencing customer senior management via their team meetings.
  • Linking the needs of clinicians / customers to the supplier marketplace so that relevant goods and services are selected and used to maximise donor care and to improve efficiencies within the supply chain.

About You

  • Post qualification experience of managing sourcing, procurement, contract management, and supplier relationship management across a wide range of categories.
  • Experience of working in a public and/or private sector management role at a senior level within a complex and diverse organisation.
  • A track record of delivering commercial benefits, including cashable savings.
  • Skilled in strategic sourcing, procurement strategy, relationship management and negotiating complex contracts.
  • Proven leadership and people management experience.
  • The ability to lead, motivate and inspire colleagues whilst working to demanding deadlines.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills coupled with strong verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications and Training

  • CIPS level 6 or equivalent level of qualification or knowledge and experience.
  • MSC in Procurement/Business/Economics or able to demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge & experience.
  • Commitment to own professional development (CPD).
