Muirhouse Medical Group, a friendly and thriving GP partnership practice, situated in north west Edinburgh with over 19,400 patients, is looking for an in-house, part-time Health Care Assistant, working between 15 and 22.5 hours a week (hours and working pattern to be discussed and agreed) to assist GPs and Practice Nurses in the delivery of clinical services.

Key Result Areas

Provide a support service to the Practice Nurse Team in their professional role.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, social services, voluntary and private agencies in assessment of needs and provision of focused care.
Provide health promotion advice regarding stopping smoking, alcohol consumption, weight, diet and exercise.

Main Duties

Carry out phlebotomy/venepuncture, including at patients' homes, checking patient ID; checking/completing laboratory request forms and identifying appropriate specimen tubes; identifying requesting clinician; checking equipment; drawing blood ensuring that all vital structures are avoided safely; labelling bottles; checking venepuncture site.
Provide general and specific health screenings (new patient checks, urinalysis and blood pressure monitoring) within agreed protocols, with referral to other members of the primary care team as necessary.
Collection of specimens
Simple dressings and removal of sutures/staples.
Keeping leaflets and other patient information up to date.
Ensuring that consulting rooms are appropriately stocked and help with stock ordering.
Clinical waste disposal and help with cleanliness of clinical areas.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

The post holder must possess the Certificate of Competence for Phlebotomy
The post holder must possess or be working towards an SVQ in health and social care or similar qualification, or have relevant experience
Own transport and driving licence required for home visits
Experience in GP IT systems, e.g. Vision and Docman is preferable
