Job summary:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the largest Virology departments in England.

The Virology department forms part of The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP), which is a collaboration between Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

The laboratory therefore provides both a clinical Virology service and a public health Virology service to the North-West of England and beyond.


Virology, delivered from the Manchester Royal Infirmary site employs approximately 100 staff and has a workload exceeding 1,000,000 specimens per year.

The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical virology service combining some traditional methodologies with a wide range of laboratory automation.


The main responsibility of this role will be to monitor and support the hardware, software and laboratory systems across the MMMP (Manchester Microbiology Medical Partnership).

This role will work closely with the IT Project Manager and help plan IT implementations


The role will monitor through processes how the hardware is performing, have a proactive approach to problem solving and work closely with the MFT, UKHSA and DLM IT teams.

The role will be required to help maintain the laboratory systems, hardware and servers; provide a wide range of data and operational reports, advise and deliver on the technical readiness of projects while helping the I.T project manager deliver an exciting and varied I.T agenda though effective comm's and time management.


The post is vital link in providing technical support & advice across Manchester Microbiology Medical Partnership as I.T is the enabler to delivering our business goals.

Location
This is an office based role located at the Clinical Scientist Building, MRI, Manchester, M13 9WL.

Working Pattern - Full Time. You will be required to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Virology service over 7 days. Staff may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, throughout the 24-hour period if appropriate to the post.


Job description:

As the
Senior IT Specialist your main responsibilities will include:

  • Supervise and maintain the delivery of IT systems within Microbiology (MRI) and act as the key point of knowledge.
  • Supervise & support the I.T Specialists in their work and development.
  • Following agreed procedures, carry out routine configuration/installation and provide sufficient information for reconfiguration of hardware and software.
  • Be responsible for maintaining stocks of IT consumable items as appropriate, ensuring they are recorded on relevant systems & are secure.
  • Install and set up new PC's, with appropriate software whilst following asset control processes.
  • Supervise laboratory network infrastructure to allow assistance in maintaining it in good working order, with backup processes followed.
  • Develop a good working knowledge of the LIS to allow assistance in troubleshooting, optimisation and onward development.
  • Work with the LIM's provider in maintaining calls logged with them and help manage the overall LIM's contract.
  • Be accountable for the accurateness of the daily checks of servers/hardware.
  • To become familiar with other databases within the department to enable support to be given to the maintenance and development of these databases.

Person specification:


Essential

  • IT based qualification at a higher education level e.g. HNC, BSc or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level
  • Demonstrate the ability to undergo further education in the field of IT
  • Microsoft Windows and Office installation and deployment
  • Sufficient or suitable relevant experience of:
  • Supporting Microsoft desktop and server environments.
  • Change control processes
  • Good working knowledge of servers & networking
  • Excellent knowledge & experience of peripheral Hardware diagnosis and rectification
  • Backup process &
