About the Role

Base Location:
Reading, London, Perth or Glasgow, however other SSE locations will be considered.


Salary:
£61,100 - £91,700 + car / allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.


Working Pattern:

What is the Role?


As Senior Regulatory Economist within the Regulation team, you'll play a critical role in providing high-quality economic analysis which will shape and support the strategic direction of SSE's Thermal and Energy Portfolio Management businesses.

You'll combine your sound understanding of the UK power market with the ability to translate complex market data, trends and energy prices and communicate the economic issues clearly with specialists and non-technical stakeholders.

You'll be instrumental in the coaching and mentoring of employees to develop data analysis skills, building capability and self-sufficiency.

As Senior Regulatory Economist you will:

  • Engage with internal stakeholders to recommend and advise on regulatory approach to ensure Regulation efficiently delivers on its strategy to realise successful commercial opportunities for SSE Thermal and EPM and minimise regulatory risk. Clearly communicate any changes in regulatory requirements that will impact on the delivery of business activities and future strategy.
  • Identify, influence, and prioritise high value and/or highrisk issues for SSE and develop compelling quantitative evidence to support our lobbying on key regulatory policies. Provide guidance and advice with an emphasis on the complex energy commodity and balancing markets, as well as the potential impact of noncompliance with obligations including REMIT and TCLC.
  • Lead projects to provide input and strategic direction into regulatory investigations where SSE could be exposed to multimillionpound penalties. You'll collaborate with SSE's other corporate teams such as legal and finance, and present and influence at executive committee/board level.
  • Coach and mentor members of the team to develop proficiency and best practice in data analysis and interpretation, and feed this into the strategic direction of the Thermal and EPM businesses. You'll ensure that the team is focused on the right priorities and provide the right level of support and response.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Ofgem, UR, CRU and other regulatory bodies and stakeholders to advocate for SSE, understand, and anticipate priority areas.

What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • Academic and professional background in either economics, econometrics, regulation, finance, STEM or closely related disciplines in addition to knowledge of current and future market challenges within the UK power markets.
  • Ability to interpret complex information in a meaningful way and communicate the detail in a way which nontechnical experts can clearly understand, supported by specialist knowledge of tools such as MS Excel or Power BI.
  • Comfortable engaging with a diverse range of business and specialist teams including legal, corporate affairs, finance, operational, commercial, energy economics and trading, in additional to presenting and influencing at executive committee level.
  • Experience of coaching and developing teams or individuals to learn new skills, maintain competence, and enable high performance.
