Research Assistant - Strategic Research Fund - Understanding Performance Anxiety

Background of project

This is an exciting opportunity for an MSc graduate to work on our new project "Understanding Performance Anxiety" at Goldsmiths, University of London.

The project is funded by the Strategic Research Fund at Goldsmiths and is a collaboration with Kings College London, University of Birmingham and the Royal College of Music.


This project's central objective is to identify the critical cognitive and neurophysiological processes underlying the effect of anxiety on musical performance.

Using methods from the fields of computational neuroscience, neuroscience, and psychology, we will investigate negative learning biases in musicians affected my music performance anxiety.

We will also assess the effects of pharmacological aids (beta blockers) on musical performance.


Overall purpose of job

The post-holder will have an interest in and/or experience of research in anxiety, a MSc degree in Neuroscience or Computational Neuroscience, a Bachelor of Medicine degree, and have experience in data analysis and collection.

The role involves participant recruitment and data collection for two lab-based studies. One study will require the acquisition of electroencephalography (EEG) and MIDI performance data in pianists.

A second, parallel study, will involve a pharmacological manipulation (beta-blockers versus placebo) and will also require the acquisition of EEG and MIDI performance data in pianists.

The successful applicant will join the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and will work closely with the Project Lead, Dr.

Maria Herrojo Ruiz.
