Description

Study Group is looking for a highly experienced, motivated, and dedicated individual to join our Academic Board as an external/independent member.

As a Board member, you will work closely with other members of the board to ensure that the highest standards of academic activity are maintained and delivered throughout our UK, the EU and online operations.

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the effectiveness, development and success of Study Group.


Academic Board will meet at least four times in any one academic cycle with at least one of these meetings being on-site at Study Group head office in Brighton.

Members will be expected to undertake relevant training (either on-site or online) and attend meetings of any committees to which they have been appointed.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Collective responsibilities:

  • Determining Study Group's overall scholarly and research strategy. This includes setting objectives for the organisation that ensure that relevant strategic objectives are realised.
  • The setting and maintenance of academic standards, and for the academic quality of programmes and their delivery in line with Study Group expectations and any regulatory requirements from the Office for Students (England) the relevant Funding Bodies (Scotland, Wales and Norther Ireland) as well as Quality and Qualifications Ireland (Republic of Ireland).
Individual responsibilities

  • To act in furtherance of Study Group's strategy, vision, mission and values through contributions at Academic Board and any other committee meetings (as necessary).
  • Provide advice and guidance on matters of academic leadership and management within the context of government policy and the HE regulatory framework.
  • To be mindful of the Nolan Principles / HE Code of Governance and observe high standards of academic governance, including respecting and promoting equality and diversity.
  • Maintain effective relationships with other Academic Board members, governors, the Chief Executive and broader Executive Team, whilst understanding and respecting the distinction between the executive and nonexecutive roles.
  • Attend a relevant induction programme; undertake any other such training as may be required from time to time; and participate in academic governance effectiveness reviews.
  • Where appropriate, act as an ambassador and to promote Study Group externally, providing links to networks that can benefit the Study Group, if and when appropriate.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of operating at a strategic level or of setting strategy and future direction of a business or enterprise.
  • Experience and understanding of governance and organisational delivery from a variety of perspectives.
  • Specialist skills/knowledge which would be of relevance to the Academic Board in its oversight of the design and delivery of academic programmes at Study Group.
  • A strategic thinker who can contribute across a range of governance, planning, financial and advocacy issues.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to influence a range of key stakeholders and to probe and challenge constructively.
  • Ability to analyse and review complex documents or matters to form decisions.
  • The ability to exercise their responsibilities with independence, impartiality and discretion.
  • Able to understand the dynamics involved in the management and operation of large and/or complex organisations.
