As an art teacher at a secondary SEMH (social, emotional, and mental health) school, you will be responsible for providing creative and engaging instruction in the visual arts to students who have a range of social, emotional, and mental health needs.

Inthis role, you will work closely with other teachers, school staff, and mental health professionals to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that meets the unique needs of each student.

Some key responsibilities of an art teacher at a secondary SEMH school may include:

  • Developing and implementing lesson plans that align with the school's curriculum and objectives, and that are tailored to the needs of students with SEMH challenges
  • Facilitating a safe and supportive learning environment that fosters creativity, selfexpression, and critical thinking skills
  • Using a variety of teaching techniques and media to engage students and support their learning, including visual arts, music, drama, and other creative outlets
  • Monitoring student progress and providing regular feedback to help them grow and develop their artistic skills
  • Collaborating with other teachers, school staff, and mental health professionals to support the overall wellbeing and academic success of students


To be successful in this role, you should have a passion for teaching and a strong background in the visual arts.

You should also be patient, empathetic, and able to adapt your teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each student.

Experience workingwith students with SEMH needs is highly desirable, as is a bachelor's or master's degree in art education.
