About the role


The Research Officer is responsible for ensuring that the AMRC (Association of Medical Research Charities) supports our members to fund high quality research that delivers patient benefit.

You will work with members to provide guidance, and showcase good practice across the sector, as well as exploring future challenges and policy development to support our members in funding research.


About AMRC


The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) is the membership organisation for charities funding medical and health research in the UK.

We have over 150 member charities that fund all stages of research - from the most basic to clinical trials - in all areas of health and disease.

Charities are driven by patient priorities and tackling areas of unmet need. Their work accelerates the delivery of innovative treatments to patients. We are proud of the vital role our members play in life sciences.


Overall objectives

  • Understand members' research funding processes and provide 121 advice on queries.
  • Develop guidance for charities AMRC quality standards and other areas of research funding, as well as signposting members to others' resources.
  • Keep up to date with what is happening in the different areas of research funding, with a particular focus on expert review, research strategy development, and research culture.
  • Engage with members and other stakeholders to develop and influence policy to improve the environment in which research is funded in UK universities.

Key relationships

  • AMRC is a small team and effective communication between all team members is essential to working productively
  • Build relationships with all categories of members to understand their processes and issues and advise on queries
  • Build relationships with other partners both funding research and also developing tools to support our members in funding research

Key responsibilities and duties

Research funding

  • Deliver AMRC's work on expert review, research strategy, and research culture including equity diversity and inclusion
  • Monitor and showcase best practice from our membership and beyond on research funding
  • Identify and engage in opportunities for AMRC and its members to inform and improve policy on research funding and the environment in which research is funded
  • Provide project management and coordination support to director for the programme of activity around responsible funding, as a core team member

Membership audit

  • Provide support and input for annual selfdeclaration of membership standards
  • Lead the five yearly audit of member charities
  • Provide advice to members on areas of research funding through group communications and one to one support.

Member networks

  • Deliver and support AMRC's Research Managers Working group, through meetings, online discussion boards and newsletters
  • Build relationships with research managers and research officers in our member charities and related organisations and understand their processes

General
duties

  • Supporting member charities as their account manager
  • Maintaining AMRC's customer relationship management (Salesforce) database and networks.
  • Contributing to AMRC's social media presence, including posting on twitter.
  • Responding quickly and efficiently to inquiries from members.
  • Helping with AMRC events as required
