Job description:


International Group


The International Group advises ministers on promoting and protecting the UK's international economic interests, to ensure the UK thrives in an ever-changing global economy.

We do this through our policy and operational work on a range of areas ranging from free trade agreements, climate change, countering illicit finance, financial sanctions to supporting developing countries and managing our relationship with Europe, US, and emerging markets.


We support the Chancellor and senior officials in building relationships with a wide range of external and international partners and represent the UK in a range of international organisations, such as the G7, the G20 and the International Monetary Fund as well as Multilateral Development Banks.

We also analyse what is happening in the world economy, and control spending on international development.

Although international travel is an important part of some roles, it is not required for every role in the group and will be specified if required.


The Sanctions and Illicit Finance (SIF) Team
The Sanctions and Illicit Finance team (SIF) is a friendly, lively, outward-facing team.

We develop policies and legislation to address economic crime and illicit finance in the UK and overseas, to help protect the stability of the global financial system.

The team is made up of 5 branches

  • Sanctions and Counter Terrorist Financing branch, works with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) and others to craft financial sanctions regimes.
  • Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and International branch. This branch leads our strategy towards, UK preparations for, and input into, meetings of the FATF and spearheads work on tackling international illicit finance. FATF sets global antimoney laundering and counterterrorist financing standards, and peer reviews countries against them.
  • Technical Assistance Unit, which works with developing countries to assist their compliance with international standards on countering illicit finance.
  • Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Unit, which owns the Money Laundering Regulations and the supervisory system which oversee compliance with them; and
  • Economic Crime Strategy Unit, which works with other departments such as the Home Office and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, law enforcement agencies and the private sector to deliver the Economic Crime Plan, delivering a number of critical reforms to the UK's capabilities.
