Second Step is a leading mental health charity in the Southwest offering housing, support and hope to people with mental health and other support needs. We promote mental health and wellbeing by supporting people and communities to build brighter futures.


We are recruiting a part time Peer Recovery and Wellbeing Worker to join our Step Down Team in Wells to support individuals leaving hospital to transition back to independence.


The Step Down Service will work with clients on their journey from acute services to their own accommodation, coproducing strength-based, individual recovery plans that provide strategies to; better manage their mental health, identify 'warning signs', build resilience and nurture positive relationships.

From the moment someone moves in, the focus will be on life after 'move on' and building practical living skills to support independence and wellbeing.

Support will be provided through 1:1 and group sessions.

Beyond their stay at the Step Down house, we will engage with local partners and our wider Open Mental Health VCSE Alliance (OMHVA) support offer to ensure sustained positive outcomes.

We are a 9-5 service that operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year to support our clients maintain a meaningful life and continue on their pathway to recovery.

About you

You will:

  • Be passionate about improving the lived experience and health of people using mental health services.
  • Have proven knowledge of support needs of people with mental health needs.
  • You will be confident in working autonomously and have excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • You will be practiced at working alongside people using a holistic approach tailored to each individual's needs.
  • Experience of time management and competing priorities when supporting people with complex needs.
  • Commitment to service user participation and involvement.
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends and bank holidays.
