  • Salary: Grade 6 - £36,024 to £44,263 per annum, according to experience

Overall purpose of the role
Through its Dalton Nuclear Institute, The University of Manchester maintains the largest nuclear research and higher learning capability across UK academia.

In West Cumbria, the heart of the UK nuclear industry, the Institute operates the Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF), a state-of-the-art research base for radiation science. The facility is a partner in national research programmes and facilitates high-end research in radiation science and nuclear engineering decommissioning.

We are looking to hire a Safety & Emerging Capabilities Officer to act as the safety coordinator and embed new capabilities within DCF. The role involves working closely with safety advisors and ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors. Additionally, the role includes supporting the development of new capabilities and facilitating their safe implementation.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of DCF's innovative work in nuclear energy, zero emissions, and emerging capabilities in medical isotopes, bio, and space. The role will involve contributing to the facility's strategic development and future plans.

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties

  • Support the establishment of new scientific capabilities and ensure safety
  • Oversee projects from concept to completion
  • Interact with users and technical staff to reach specifications
  • Assemble scientific apparatus and develop controlling software
  • Act as safety coordinator and liaise with safety teams
  • Engage with health and safety community and contribute to committees
  • Develop risk assessments, deliver safety briefings, and manage workplace inspections
  • Contribute to emergency management and investigation of incidents
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with policies and procedures

Person Specification - Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A relevant health and safety qualification or demonstrable safety experience
  • Experience in developing experimental techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
  • Familiarity with health and safety legislation
  • Commitment to professional development and university values
