The responsibilities for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for 2023 are as follows:

  • Positioning the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement

  • Delivering talent programmes, physical and digital infrastructure and regulation to support our economy, security and public services
  • R&D funding

For 2023, our priorities are:

  • Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.
  • Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs including by delivering worldclass physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.
  • Put our public services including the NHS and schools at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of inhouse STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.
  • Strengthen international collaboration on science and technology in line with the Integrated Review, and ensure our researchers are able to continue to work with leading scientists in Europe and around the world.
  • Deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms to drive competition and promote innovation, including the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill and our proinnovation approach to regulating AI.
  • Pass the remaining stages of the reformed Online Safety Bill to keep British people, especially children, safe online.

Job description:


  • We are advertising an exciting role in the Strategic Finance team and are looking for a highcalibre individual to shape the future of
    DSIT spending to best deliver departmental priorities.
  • The team comprises two branches Strategic Finance and Management Accounts. We are a friendly, inclusive, dynamic and fast paced team at the centre of
    DSIT finance. We support Ministers and the Executive Committee on
    DSIT's financial strategy, working at the boundary between the technical and the political to shape high profile Government policies across the Department's entire budget. We focus on maximising value for money for each pound that the Department spends. We coordinate policy funding and operational expenditure, lead on fiscal events and maintain oversight of the in year position.

Person specification:


  • Work closely with
    DSIT's wider finance function to develop a sound understanding of our position and progress against delivery plans, to inform
    DSIT's strategic financial planning and choices relating to budget management.
  • Develop close working relationships with colleagues in the rest of the finance function, Strategy and HR that allow you to deliver through others, and work in a reciprocal manner towards joint and crosscutting objectives.
  • Transform information into insight to drive decision making processes, clearly and concisely synthesising complex financial and nonfinancial analysis in verbal and written advice.
  • Build an indepth knowledge base of
    DSIT's Groups including how they work, their financial and delivery risks and opportunities. Understand their peformance, business priorities and critical paths for delivery through collaboration and continued relationship building with colleagues across the business.
