We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as an Operational Support Manager at British Forces Post Office (BFPO) Northolt.

In this role you will be entrusted with ensuring a high-quality service is delivered by using your ability to collaboratewith others, provide suggestions for resolution to problems and to deliver a range of time-sensitive outputs.

For centuries, our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail across our military history including both World Wars.

The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) provides postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces and is a renownedbrand across Defence.

The Defence Courier Service (DCS) is responsible for the safe and secure movement of Protectively Marked Material (PMM) in the UK and worldwide.

On top of the salary this position also offers an Outer London Weighting /Recruitment and Retention Allowances of £3250.

About the role


We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated, hardworking, and organised manager who can work in a customer-focused team environment to tight timescales, while remaining positive and focused on delivery of support to DCS operations outputs.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Functional Development Officer for up to 14 Courier Escort Drivers and will be required to support their training and professional development.
  • Working closely with the DCS Quality Assurance Manager, you will be required to cover aspects of this crucial role, to facilitate the continued secure escort of PMM in accordance with correct diplomatic processes contained within the Vienna Convention.
  • Operate and contribute to the management of a small but busy team receiving and escorting circa 1500 items of PMM weekly.
  • Responsible for appropriately tasking Defence Couriers (DC) to enable the swift and secure worldwide escort of PMM.
  • Ensure the production and distribution of monthly DC Schedules outlining DCS Routine Tasks.
  • Being the DCS Airport Authorised Signatory for Airside Passes and booking all DCs routine flights and Eurotunnel crossings.
  • Liaising with DCS Operations Cell, you will forecast and book training, medicals, and courses, ensuring all are in date. Work with managers to approve and input all leave requests, Medical and Dental appointments into a monthly duties matrix.?
You will be required to be 1 of 2 Electronic Procurement Card (EPC) Holders for Defence Courier Service (Full training is provided)


In the role you will be required to work 7.4 hours per day between 08:00 - 18:00 hours, Monday to Friday, although some additional hours or flexible working may be required.

Exact duty timings will be discussed at interview.

Individuals are required to attend site. Headquarters BFPO is conveniently accessible from the M40 motorway, the A40 and London Underground tube stations.??

Person specification

  • Proven ability to manage and work within a team.
  • Proven effective communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Intermediate IT skills and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, and Excel).?
  • Previous experience within, or clear understanding of, the logistic/transport sector.
