Role Purpose
The Assessment Research Group (ARG) sits within the wider English and Exams Strategic Business Unit (E&E SBU). The position is focused on supporting ARG activites as a leading international research group.

The ARG leads on research in key language assessment areas including innovative language test design and development, the use of educational technology in language assessment, Language Assessment Literacy engagement aimed at teachers, policy makers, and other stakeholders, and research and expert advisory work supporting assessment and language education reform projects in education systems.

ARG works with teams across the British Council, including the E&E SBU and English for Education Systems teams situated in the Cultural Engagement SBU.


The ARG coordinates and oversees an active thought-leadership agenda, including publishing and presenting as experts in the field, providing editorial direction on specialised publications and research reports, and convening conferences and events that bring together international experts on language assessment, learning and policy.


Main accountabilities but not limited to the following:
Relationship and stakeholder management

  • Build and foster relationships with partners and contacts to effectively facilitate ARG
activities;

  • Where necessary to provide support to essential internal and external key stakeholders on
a project basis;

  • Proactively build and maintain excellent relationships with internal partners and
stakeholders to ensure integrated, joined up and future-proofed approaches and solutions;

  • Develop professional and peer networks to enhance own knowledge and expertise.
Service improvement

  • Implement, review and develop procedures & processes related to administrative and
operational aspects of new products, working across teams to get input and ensure smooth
integration; acting as key liaison with development team regarding UX and other user journey components to facilitate this;

  • Implement, review and develop operational documentation related to relevant ARG activity,
e.g. workflow diagrams and compliance templates;

  • Ensure the use of the British Council brand architecture, monitor compliance, and manage
interventions to address and resolve reasons for noncompliance.

Commercial and financial management

  • Provide crossteam support for a range of administrative, procurement, travel and other tasks as required, liaising with relevant teams across the organisation to achieve effective and timely completion of work;
  • Use agreed corporate systems and processes, support with the planning and management
of team and project budgets;

  • Show a clear understanding of procurement processes and requirements and ensure these
are implemented;

  • Contribute to monthly and yearend reporting on progress against plan and deliverables, budget, and management of issues and risks;
  • Show an understanding of value for money/cost effectiveness in the advice, recommendations and service support provided to colleagues in the ARG in order for them to achieve the best results from their projects, products and services

Role specific knowledge and experience:


  • Experience working in Project Management
  • Track record experience of overseeing operational processes and procedures
  • Experience working across teams
  • Demonstrable experience in managing relationships
Bachelor or equivalent undergraduate qualification
