Role Summary


The 1st Line Risk and Control Manager will play a key role in first line risk management within EQ Paymaster.

The key purpose of the role is to deliver business ownership for the identification, mitigation, monitoring and control of operational risk.


Overseeing all aspects of the first line risk management functions ensuring ongoing adherence with risk and controls across a variety of operational teams, remain compliant within all aspects of risk framework and control activity.

The role encompasses risk and controls, consistency of process and making sure key risk indicators are well-defined and incidents are well managed.

Core Duties/Responsibilities

  • Deputise for Head of Risk and Business Assurance shadow in preparation for succession planning.
  • Developing effective Risk Management framework and policies.
  • Attend senior governance risk forums (PEGC), taking responsibility for Risk Management.
  • Influence key clients at senior levels.
  • Support operational colleagues to mitigate risks.
  • Act as focal point for operational teams to manage risk.
  • Act as mentor for junior Risk Management staff, supporting their development and ensuring the value they add to EQRS and respect from clients.
  • Driving a strong Risk Management culture.
  • Establishing and overseeing the implementation of Operational Risk policies and associated governance processes.
  • Independently assess risks and drive actions to address the root causes working closely with the Business, Support functions and Compliance team.
  • Monitoring Risk Management effectiveness through investigation of operational issues and assurance of critical controls.
  • Effective monitoring of operational risks through implementation of the KRI metrics, with escalation of emerging risks where necessary.
  • Maintain, update and assess risks and controls within the Logicgate Risk Management system
  • Provide reporting to line managers; ensuring that issues that have significant business impact are recorded.
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory and industry developments and how these may create risk challenges for EQ Paymaster.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships between the Operations team and appropriate colleagues in own and other business units.
  • Liaise effectively with EQ Group's 2nd and 3rd line functions (Compliance & Risk and Internal Audit).

  • Strong leadership qualities, acting as a role model to the team and other colleagues.
  • Proven management capability, setting clear targets and expectations.
  • Practical experience of operating a risk management framework within operations.
  • Strong business planning skills with the ability to balance the need for a highlevel strategic approach with the requirement for detailed implementation plans;
  • Strong influencing skills and an ability to operate effectively within a risk matrix management framework;
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Efficiency in managing priorities and adapting quickly to change;
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and deliver to tight deadlines;
  • Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
