The Senior Tree Inspector will support the Principal Tree Officer in ensuring that the Tree Service:

  • Meets the council's duty of care in respect of trees
  • Increases customer satisfaction with the Tree Service
  • Protects, cares for and enhances Islington's urban forest now, and for the long term benefit of the community.
  • Successfully delivers external tree contracts


The Senior Tree Inspector post is responsible for the delivery of the Tree Services cyclical tree inspection and the production of associated tree reports for internal client departments within the Council and external income generation clients.

Working as part of the Tree Service in Islington.


The tree service sits within Green space and Leisure in the Environment and commercial Operations Service of the Environment Directorate.


We are a multi-functioning team which includes:

  • The management of the public realm trees ( Highways, Parks and Housing)
  • Planning tree officers, maintaining the protected trees and trees and development
  • Income generation

The post will be expected to:

  • To use and assist others in the use of information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.

  • To undertake training and constructively take part in meetings, supervision, seminars and other events designed to improve communication and assist with the effective development of the post and post holder.

The Senior Tree Inspector will be responsible for undertaking a range of tree surveys including BS 5837 tree surveys, condition surveys and pest and disease surveys.

A main function will be undertaking cyclical programmed tree inspections for our internal and external clients within and outside of Islington.


As a Senior Tree Inspector, you will need to be knowledgeable, highly motivated, an effective team player, and have the ability to understand and meet targets and deadlines.

You will need to have the ability to learn and assimilate new information while also being an excellent communicator.

The majority of the trees on Council owned land are recorded on our tree database, Ezytreev.

Having experience of using tree database software is essential and an expert ability to identify tree species and pest and disease is essential.

Experience of mapping software is advantageous.


Responsibilities include:


  • To assist the Principal Tree Officer in the work of the section, ensuring that the council's Tree Policy is implemented.
  • To assist the Team Manager (Arboriculture) in securing and facilitating external arboricultural contracts.
  • To inspect trees in council ownership on a cyclical basis, undertaking a Visual Tree Inspection with a view to their safety and maintenance requirements.
  • To update tree records using the council's tree management database on site.
  • To identify potential locations for tree planting.
  • To monitor works undertaken by the council's tree work contractor to ensure adherence to specification and are also being carried out in accordance to health and safety regulations.
  • To assist with the monitoring of development sites.
  • To monitor works undertaken by the council's tree work contractors.
  • To occasionally inspect trees in council ownership on a responsive basis with a view to their safety and maintenance requirements, and arrange for subsequent tree maintenance work as required.
  • To plan monitor, supervise and develop the tree inspector.
  • To produce plans and tree reports for external clients.
  • To liaise and develop good client relationships with internal and external clients.
  • To provide tree surveys and reports as required.
  • To deliver training on arboricultural matters.
  • To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.


The Tree Service operate a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year emergency call out service.

Some responsibility for the provision of this service may be required as part of this post.
