Catering Assistant
Hours: 16 hours per week - Term Time Only
Job Purpose
- Basic preparation of food and beverages, simple cooking, transporting and serving of meals, general kitchen and dining room duties.
- To be able to operate electronic point of sale.
Aims and Objectives
- To prepare and serve food to pupils, staff and visitors.
- To ensure compliance with food standards regulations.
- To ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Prepare the dining and service areas to an appropriate standard.
- Serve food and beverages at the specified times and in appropriate quantities.
- Assist in the preparation of food when required.
- Weighing of products in preparation for the next day, and being proactive in preparing food for the next day.
- Assist with the moving and setting up of the dining furniture.
- Ensure that tables, chairs, trolleys and floors are kept clean and tidy at all times.
- Clean all areas of the servery, salad bar, beverage machines and preparation areas in accordance with appropriate cleaning schedules.
- Assist with the washing up of cutlery, crockery, trays and light equipment.
- Operate the serving tills in accordance with managements instructions.
- Cashier duties in addition to collect till register and to maintain the tills in clean condition and ensure it is returned to storage.
- Clean the kitchen and dining room as required.
- Comply with the Health and Safety at work act.
- To be trained in correct use of all equipment.
- Take regular temperature of food and record on appropriate paperwork.
- Catering assistants must attend the following mandatory courses:
- Food Allergy Awareness (delivered internally or externally)
- Could be requested to work at other SPIE catering units
- Any other adhoc duties required by your Line Manager.

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills
The knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience relevant to the position are:
Essential
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Understand safe working practices and health and safety legislation.
- COSHH Training
- Ability to work on his/her own
- Wellorganised and capable of prioritising own workload.
- Flexible approach to working as part of a team.
- Previous experience of working in a catering environment.
- Knowledge of good hygiene practices.
- Wellpresented.
Desirable
- Experience of using catering equipment.
