The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health.

Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are seeking an experienced mathematical modeller to develop and deliver a research portfolio supporting outbreak response.

The post-holder will manage new and innovative research projects and provide modelling expertise for the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST) and the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Modelling and Health Economics.


The post involves analysis of epidemiological, behavioural and genomic data to develop methods and software tools that inform outbreak analysis, such as reconstructing outbreak dynamics and understanding the factors driving transmission.

It will involve close work with teams in the UK-PHRST, UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Imperial College London, and partners in Low
- and Middle

  • Income Countries (LMICs) to support informed decisions during outbreak response. The postholder will also support the development of outbreak response teams in programme eligible countries to ensure effective preparedness and response for future epidemics/pandemics. The post-holder should expect to travel overseas frequently on behalf of the UK-PHRST to build strategic partnerships and oversee research and capacity strengthening projects in LMICs.

Projects will involve complex and collaborative work.

The post is full-time and fixed term until 31/03/2025. The post is funded by the UK Government Overseas Development Aid and is available immediately.
