Hawkins Steel produces structural steel to the harmonised standard which covers fabricated structural steelwork to BS EN 1090:

About the job


The apprentice journey at Hawkins starts with and initial labouring phase to ensure that skills required in the steel workshop are learnt and well understood prior to entering the formal apprenticeship.

The purpose of this role to work under the direction and guidance of experienced supervisors and welder fabricator, carry out general labouring and welding for the steel workshop.

The job holder will work towards and be expected to achieve a General Welder Level 2 qualification or equivalent.

Location Unit 9a, Thorpe Way, Banbury, OX16 4SP - Hawkins 1 or 3 and site locations


Job type Full-time, 24 months contract


Key Responsibilities

  • To ensure the steel workshop clean, tidy and organised at all times, ensuring that labelling is accurate and up to date.
  • To ensure that equipment/products are stored neatly.
  • To support the manufacturing process with general labouring works.
  • To carry out all fabrication and welding activities as required.
  • To use small tools and equipment as required including powered machines
(for eg:

guillotines and brake press).

  • To attend College (1 day a week
  • TBC), and undertake any additional training as requested.
  • To take part in the apprentice review process.
  • To follow Health & Safety policy and procedures, including the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) where needed.
  • To operate all machinery and equipment including forklift truck and overhead crane in line with the company's safe operating procedures.
  • To assist in steel installations on construction sites and live manufacturing facilities.
  • Any other duties as required by the Fabrication Supervisors and Steel Director.

Experience and knowledge

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Team player
  • Problem solving ability and positive attitude to drive continual improvements forward
  • Good timekeeping and reliability
  • Good knowledge of English and communication skills (GCSEs English
  • Level 1)
  • Willingness to follow safety guidelines at all times
  • To be physically fit
  • Can demonstrate attention to detail and show initiative
  • To undertake any training as requested by the company

Advantageous but not essential

  • Labouring experience in a steel workshop
  • Experience in the operation of guillotines and brake press equipment
  • Forklift truck licence
  • OHC licence
  • Full, clean driving licence
