Downham Market Academy - Required September 2023

Key Responsibilities

  • To help maintain and improve outcomes, both academic and pastoral, for students across the school;
  • To provide support for heads of house, personal tutors and students acting as a bridge between academic and pastoral support, with the aim of ensuring that individual students engage more effectively in learning and achieve appropriately;
  • To provide support for individual students and their families to raise motivation and improve on attendance;
  • To encourage pupils to become independent learners, to raise self
- esteem, their aspirations and to support the inclusion of pupils in all aspects of school life;

  • To investigate and support students or families with safeguarding concerns. This may include attending FSP, CiN or CP meetings as well as making referrals to external agencies for support;
  • To provide targeted pastoral and academic support for LAC and pLAC students.

Pastoral Support

  • To assist in monitoring, evaluating, recording, analysing and using school data to identify students who require additional support (i.e. those who have been identified as underperforming or who have specifically asked for further help);
  • To contribute to the production, monitoring and review of effective student intervention strategies and plans;
  • To ensure that senior school staff, line manager, relevant teaching staff and Heads of House are kept informed about the progress and wellbeing of students so that those who most need support can be identified effectively and appropriate interventions agreed;
  • To work with other school staff as appropriate to draw up, implement and share with relevant staff individualised action plans for each student in targeted groups;
  • To build mutual confidence and respect and foster effective working relationships with all;
  • To be committed and sensitive in ensuring equality of opportunity for students.

Safeguarding

  • To understand and implement school child protection procedures and comply with legal responsibilities;
  • To monitor the My Concern system, taking action where appropriate and assigning concerns to colleagues for specific action;
  • To manage and record referrals to external agencies
  • To deliver safeguarding training, including the Prevent strategy, to new staff members or update training to existing staff members;
  • To raise awareness and promote the culture of safeguarding within the school;
  • To identify and intervene with children missing from education (CME);
  • To ensure the most up to date and relevant information is communicated to staff where necessary;
  • To engage with all stakeholders, including school staff, parents/carers and external agencies;
  • To support the SENDCo to deliver plan and interventions to vulnerable students;
  • To coordinate provision of counselling services;
  • To work with school council reps to promote student voice.

Behaviour

  • To recognise and challenge any incidents of racism, bullying, harassment, victimisation and any form of abuse of equal opportunities, ensuring compliance with relevant school policies and procedures and making sure the individual/s involved understand it is unacceptable;
  • To provide support and assistance for students' pastoral needs, using a range of behaviour strategies to support challenging behaviour including contribution to the formulation and dissemination of Pastoral Support Plans (PSPs);
  • To meet and greet and supervise students' arrival and departure from the school at either end of the school day, as appropriate;
  • To support and implement school rules such as adherence to uniform and punctuality policy;
  • To support SLT in provision of work and administration of students who have been withdrawn from lessons for behavioural reasons and excluded students;
  • To initiate Early Help Assessment [EHA] plans and work with senior pastoral support staff in order to address the needs of vulnerable students.

Attendance

  • To monitor the attendance patterns of identified students to check their punctuality to and attendance in lessons and liaise with the tutor, head of house and the attendance administrator as necessary;
  • To liaise with the Assistant Headteacher responsible for attendance to implement support for individual students to improve attendance and challenge families as necessary to ensure that attendance is not a barrier to academic success.

Liaison with families

  • To develop contact with families/carers of pupils who have identified needs in relation to student's behaviour, welfare, attendance, punctuality, uniform, and rewards, to keep them informed of progress and secure positive family support for the pupil and maintain good working relations between home/school, including home visits where necessary;
  • To liaise with parents experiencing extreme difficulties and discuss sensitive issues related to drugs/alcohol, smoking, sexual health and emotional welfare;
  • To attend relevant meetings
