Description

An exciting and newly created opportunity has become available for a Technical Performance Supervisor to help assist with managing, maintaining and optimising the day-to-day operations of our water recycling centres and bio-digestion sites at Taunton, West Huntspill and Vale Road, Somerset.

The role


Our Bioresources team supports the operation and maintenance of sewage and sludge treatment plants to meet quality standards in the Somerset region.


As a Technical Supervisor, you will assist the Site Manager with supervising, supporting, training and mentoring staff at all levels and assist the site operators in their routine maintenance tasks primarily at Taunton Ham.

You will also provide assistance and cover for West Huntspill WRC and Vale Road STC, deputising for the site manager where necessary.


You will be responsible for the activities delivered by Operators to ensure you meet the relevant KPI and SLA targets.

A key part of this role will be to ensure both the process and occupational safety of our people, as well as the operation of our assets and the treatment process.

You will be expected to manage daily permitting requirements, make sound concise decisions and manage change effectively.

The main responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Managing activities and implementing initiatives to encourage safe working practices and seek continual improvement in task methods including developing and implementing safe systems of works
  • Supporting operational staff on site to maintain and improve process performance
  • Actively optimising sludge quality whilst also optimising energy and chemical use
  • Developing detailed knowledge of hazardous areas, safe working practices in these areas, associated procedures and subsequently issuing permits to work
  • Liaising with and managing contractor activity on site, including reviewing RAMS
  • Managing incidents on site whilst demonstrating effective decision making, thereby ensuring a safe and efficient resolution
  • Contributing to and implementing change necessary to meet business goals
  • Assisting with operational maintenance activities on site on a daily basis
  • Raising process risk assessments, Electrical Mechanical and Instrumentation jobs and prioritising appropriately

What do I need?


We are looking for a team player who is able to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and levels of knowledge.

You will need to be organised, proactive, have great problem-solving skills whilst also being comfortable working outdoors. Ideally, you will be working towards NVQ level 3 STW (all wastewater units) or an equivalent electrical/mechanical qualification.


In addition, you will have:

  • Excellent knowledge of the treatment process with a passion for delivering the highest performance and quality
  • Experience operating and optimising treatment processes
  • Mechanical or electrical experience in fault finding and rectifying issues
  • Mechanical or electrical isolation authorisations, or willing to work towards these
  • Experience in producing written reports and procedures to a high quality
  • Good knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office packages, especially Microsoft Excel and Word
  • A full clean UK driving licence


An understanding of operational procedures is essential, to ensure you will be able to make the correct decisions under pressure.

A knowledge of IOSHH health and safety, DSEAR/ATEX and process safety is important and the ability to produce clear, comprehensive documents and procedures.

Finally, to be successful in this role, you will be competent in resolving technical problems in the operation and maintenance of assets with advance fault finding and solution skills.

You must also be able to participate in a full standby rota if required.
