Job summary:


Are you passionate about data protection and information governance? Do you have a keen eye for detail and a knack for finding practical solutions? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Data Protection and Information Governance team at Social Security Scotland.


As part of the team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that Social Security Scotland complies with data protection, freedom of information, and records management laws and policies.

You will have the chance to work with a diverse range of stakeholders and contribute to the continuous improvement of our data protection practices.


  • The Data Protection and Information Governance team has responsibility for ensuring that Social Security Scotland complies with its obligations under data protection, freedom of information and records management law and policy.
We do this in a number of ways including:

  • supporting teams to carry out data protection impact assessments and ensuring Social Security Scotland implements a privacy by design approach;
- investigating and responding to personal data breaches;
- managing requests for information under data protection and freedom of information laws including requests from third parties;
- setting standards for data protection and records management, carrying out awareness raising and assurance work on compliance with legislation and policies.


We deliver social security benefits to a very large number of clients who depend on us to manage their data in a secure and appropriate way.

We take a risk based, continuous improvement approach to our work and the post holder will play a key role in ensuring data protection is effectively designed into our products and services, helping to identify risks and provide advice to a broad range of stakeholders.

As well as the opportunity to engage with a variety of projects and teams across Social Security Scotland, the role will also bring the opportunity to build cross government relationships.

You will develop real expertise and support the organisation on data protection compliance.

Job description:


  • Provide data protection advice to Social Security Scotland colleagues with a particular focus on building understanding and awareness of 'privacy by design', by contributing to training and awareness opportunities.
  • Management of personal data breach investigations to ensure lessons are learned.
  • Develop positive working relationships with live running teams, operational leads and external stakeholders to drive continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to carry out, review and maintain data protection impact assessments to ensure our use of personal data complies with data protection law.
  • Contribute to the review and maintenance of data sharing agreements by collaborating with other government departments including DWP and HMRC.
  • Ensure data protection compliance in procurement initiatives by inputting into specifications, assessing bids, developing data protection schedules in contracts and implementing outputs of data protection impact assessments in contracts.
  • Identifying trends, risks and opportunities for improvement activities.
  • Liaise with Senior Data Protection Practitioners and the Data Protection Officer to escalate and/or resolve issues.
  • Line management responsibility for 1 x B1 Data Protection Advisor.

Person specification:


  • 2. You will have a strong track record of working well with others and the ability to confidently communicate with and influence colleagues at all levels to achieve positive outcomes.
  • 3. You will be effective at analysing complex information from multiple sources, be able to identify and explain risks and issues and demonstrate the ability to make sound recommendations in response.
  • 4. You will have a strong track record of delivering continuous improvement with the ability to manage and prioritise competing tasks and work to tight deadlines
