This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join Bristol City Council as dedicated Highways Structures Inspection Officer and be part of a flexible and committed team delivering high quality service standards in relation all the city's Structures and Bridges, working within the Bridges and structures team as part of the large Highway Maintenance Group embedded with the Transport Service, helping to keep our spectacular waterfront city on the move, both from a maritime and Highway structures perspective.


The Highways Maintenance Group within the Transport Service is at the very forefront of the efforts being made by the City Council and other stakeholders to improve maintain and develop the transport service in our City, for the benefit of its citizens, businesses and visitors.

Key to this is the effective inspection, maintenance and improvements/refurbishment to all the highway bridges and structures and other authority owned structural assets located within the public domain.


The overall Highway Maintenance Service consists of 5 Teams covering the City: - Area Highways Team, Strategic Highways Team, Bridges and Structures Team, Highway Electrical Assets Team and Assets and Contracts team.

Each Team is managed by a distinct Team Manager, all overseen by the Highway Maintenance Group Manager.


What will I be doing?


As a Structures Inspector you will take a lead role in ensuring the safety of all those who use the bridges and structures highway infrastructure by undertaking cyclical programmed Bridges and Structures inspections identifying and data logging all observed defects and entering inspection information onto the existing Bridges Asset Management database systems.


As a Highway Structures Officer you be required also to inspect and engage with external Contractors on sites to ensure compliance with private Developer work form a structural approval and compliance perspective.

You will be in a public facing role, sometimes investigating and responding to complaints and enquires. The role will also work with businesses and organisations associated with the Highway.


What do I need to have?


The role would suit a person who has experience of Highway Maintenance works and an understanding of the legislation that governs it.

You should be someone who thrives on responsibility, continuous performance improvement and customer focus.


You should be willing to work outdoors and be able to meet the physical demands of the job, be task orientated and have a strong customer focus.


The post will mainly be based at 100 temple Street but will involve significant site and outdoor Bridge inspection work.
