Head of Airside Operations and Safety

Reports to:
Chief Operating Officer


ROLE PURPOSE


Assure the safe, compliant and efficient operation and sustainable strategic development of the aerodrome, and a safe working environment for all employees, ensuring all relevant regulatory responsibilities are complied with as a minimum.


PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assure high levels of regulatory compliance and high standards of safety and efficiency for all airside operational activities including business partners, and ensure the aerodrome safety management system is maintained and fit for purpose.
  • Monitor performance against agreed compliance and safety standards for the airside operation, recommending and implementing appropriate remedial action.
  • Develop the Air Traffic Management (ATM) assets within the airside environment, including the specification, development, planning and oversight of short and longterm capital projects.
  • Act as key stakeholder for the planning and development of other capital airside assets, working closely with the Infrastructure Team.
  • Collaborate with other UK airports on best practices, synergies and operational challenges and opportunities to improve innovation, efficient processes, and increased success of our Airside Operation.
  • Create, deliver and embed the strategic vision and operational plan for Airside Operations.
  • Act as the technical lead on matters relating to airspace, aviation regulations and strategies, informing and influencing relevant strategic projects and forums, and provide advice to the COO on preparation for change.
  • Lead the Airspace Change Proposal process in line with CAP1616 to ensure BRS secures a successful outcome to the FASI-S implementation programme, due to deliver in 2024/2
  • Evaluate operational challenges and opportunities faced by the business and identify appropriate actions to mitigate risks and develop future opportunities.
  • Lead and direct allocated teams, coaching, developing and empowering them to deliver a consistently high level of service and continuously seek improvements in working practices.
  • Plan, monitor and effectively manage departmental budgets relating to Opex, Capex and specific projects, overseeing management and availability of contracted services to ensure adequate resourcing and levels of service are maintained or exceeded.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance and delivery of shared objectives, monitoring performance against agreed SLAs.
  • Oversee the contracted services responsible for Air Navigation Service (Air Traffic Control) provision and the maintenance of Airfield equipment and systems to ensure continued compliance and operational efficiency, whilst investigating new technologies to improve resilience and reliability.
  • Oversee the contracted services for airside bussing operation to drive operational efficiency and support operational safety.
  • Manage the contracted services responsible for fuel supply and delivery at the airport, to ensure fuel quantities and quality are maintained at appropriate levels and costs.
  • Act as the Strategic Lead for Ground Handling Organisations in terms of compliance with safety requirements and adherence to the BRS Operating Licence, working closely with the Head of Customer Operations to ensure a coordinated approach with landside operations.
  • Oversee the contracted services for Southside ground handling and fuel delivery.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Full understanding of EASA requirements and other regulatory obligations applicable to airside management.
  • Demonstrable experience in an operational safety role within an aviation environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in the use of safety management systems.
  • Demonstrable experience in the management of change.
  • Experience of driving Continuous Improvement in an operational environment.
  • Knowledge of airport operational systems, including Airfield Ground Lighting and critical ATM equipment.
  • Proven track record of leading multifunctional teams in a highly regulated and contract environment where operational performance is business critical.
  • Proven leadership capabilities with the ability to coach, develop, empower and performance manage a large team.
  • Proactive, selfmotivated, tenacious, resilient.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to build effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship building and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work crossfunctionally to achieve business goals.
