About the Role:


The Commissioning Editor is responsible for setting out the strategic vision for the Medical Education and Clinical Medicine program in the Health Careers & Professions Group.

As the Commissioning Editor, you will be responsible for identifying gaps and opportunities in the program, commissioning projects in print and digital formats, carrying out pre-contract project development and performing market research across the Medicine program in order to identify and assess commissioning opportunities.


The Commissioning Editor is responsible for the preparation and oversight of financial costings in order to ensure projects meet Wiley's financial goals as well as liaising post-contract with authors in order to maintain a close and productive relationship including, where required, pushing projects through the manuscript preparation and content management stages towards completion.


As the Commissioning Editor, you will organize the review and development process for all book proposals and manuscripts while ensuring the accurate and timely transmission of information among authors, editors, departments, and customers including completing handovers for all budget books and serving as a main point of contact for internal and external customer requests.

You will also work closely with global team members in editorial, marketing and production, attend academic conferences as required and maintain publishing systems records, contracts, and paper files.


How you will make an impact:

  • Establish short-medium term strategies for the publishing program.
  • Commission a targeted number of titles including the soliciting and assessment of proposals and taking them through the review and approval process to contract.
  • Carry out precontract project development and market research across specific areas within the Medicine program.
  • Commission development reviews of projects proposed for publication by seeking out and contacting potential adopters for their comments.
  • Manage the review and development process for all manuscripts through commissioning potential adopters to comment on some or all chapters; analyze and report pertinent information to the author.
  • Assist in various marketingrelated activities to include conducting market research, drafting back cover copy, preparing catalog book lists and proofing catalog copy.
  • Obtain endorsements for appropriate books by targeting and contacting highprofile academics and professionals for use in marketing and promotional efforts.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for authors and contributors by providing answers to questions in a timely manner and assisting the Executive Editor in managing client relationships.
  • As required, provide support at conferences to include setting up and manning a Wiley exhibit, speaking with existing and potential customers, authors, editors and society executives, and taking orders for books and journals, and promoting the program.
  • Visit key institutions to meet with existing authors, reviewers and other customers to identify market needs.
  • Interview customers (academics etc.) facetoface and virtually to identify potential new authors and reviewers, and to carry out market research into current and future needs for learning and teaching materials in given areas.
  • Organize the publishing process for all books in the annual budget by working with the Editorial Team to draw up a list of projects likely to come in during a set time period and chasing authors to submit their work on time.
  • Working closely with the Editorial Assistant to ensure maintenance of project and book files; processing of advances, contributor and reviewer payments, and departmental invoices; processing of contracts, archiving, and correspondence; processing of all Library of Congress forms; processing and payment of permissions where required.
  • Working closely with the managing editorial team to ensure that manuscripts are prepared for production, and taking action to ensure their completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensuring all publishing systems are as accurate and consistent as possible to ensure current information is available.
  • Prepare and process all author/editor contracts and contributor contracts by completing required documentation, coordinating, preparing and mailing packages as required and regularly tracking and followingup on contract status to ensure that all contracts are processed and completed/received in a timely manner.
