  • Division: Commercial Operations
  • Job Type:
  • Requisition Number: Department:
  • Job Function: Sales and Commercial
    About The Role:

The UK has set out its ambition to be net zero by 2050 and the energy industry is responding - together we are building a cleaner, greener Britain.

The trading team is part of the National Control function within the Electricity System Operator [ESO], where we work alongside the Electricity National Control Centre looking for innovative ways to optimise the scheduling and operating plan using commercial tools.

Our time horizon is current week down to near real time. We develop trading strategies and provide commercial insight to deliver solutions in a cost-effective manner.

As a trader, you will be part of a larger team of up to 11 who work on a rota pattern, working an average 4-day week and 1 weekend in 4.

Our core hours are 08:00 -18:30, outside of this the role is covered on a standby basis (typically 1 standby per week).

Additional hours are paid as overtime which typically equates to 15-20% increase on base salary.

The key benefit of this working schedule is additional days off, due to the 4-day working week pattern, including a period of 6 days off in each 4-week cycle.

We can support flexible working within the rota, and we offer limited hybrid working with an expectation of presence in the Wokingham office 2/3 days a week.

A full training program is provided that will guide you through to becoming an authorised trader.

Key Accountabilities:

We are a team who carry out a core function of trading with counterparties to meet our short-term energy requirements at lowest cost

This includes:

  • Negotiating directly with counterparties such as generators on the transmission network
  • Running competitive auction style procurement processes with European parties active on interconnectors
  • Balancing risk and cost to ensure the ESO operates a safe energy system at the lowest cost possible.
  • Training new team members and sharing best practice and knowledge
  • Providing insight on markets to internal stakeholders

In addition to covering the authorised roles on the rota, you will have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects within the trading team and across the ESO.

You can expect to spend approximately half of your time working on projects.

These might include:

  • Data and modelling type analysis
  • Developing automation and new trading tools
  • Presenting externally about the trading activities we take part in
  • Managing external stakeholders
  • Creating new trading services, products or strategies

About You:

  • Experience or interest in commerciality and optimisation related to the energy industry and/or trading
  • Excellent commercial and negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of energy industry and electricity markets, particularly power
  • Customer and Stakeholder management experience
  • Data analytics skills including languages such as Python or R would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of power system engineering can be beneficial but is not essential

What You'll Get:

This role offers a competitive salary between £53,560 - £62,399 dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 15%.

You will also have access to several flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.

About Us:

As the Electricity System Operator (ESO) for Great Britain we are in a privileged position.

We sit at the heart of the energy system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand second by second.

Ultimately, we keep the lights on and the electricity flowing directly to where it's needed.

We also play an instrumental part in transforming the energy system so that it can meet the government's net zero carbon emissions target by 2050.

Join us and you won't just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain - you will be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
