Job overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a genuine interest in becoming a Maternal and Fetal Medicine Subspecialist.

This is an RCOG accredited subspecialty training post in Maternal and Fetal Medicine and forms part of the East Midlands Training Programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The post is an exciting opportunity for training in the two major obstetric centres based in Nottingham, based only a few miles apart at Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be based predominantly at the QMC campus but will be expected to attend clinical sessions at both campuses.

The trainee is expected to maximize opportunities and cover the modules of the RCOG curriculum in Maternal Fetal Medicine over the two years with regular fetal and maternal medicine clinic sessions and labour ward sessions throughout the two years.

The fetal medicine sessions will focus on skills of anomaly scanning and invasive procedures. All five sub-specialty-trained consultants in MFM are actively involved in the training programme.

Additional training run alongside these core sessions in attend clinical genetics, intensive care and anaesthesia, neonatal unit and paediatric surgery, perinatal pathology and specialist laboratory sessions.

Duties will be flexible depending on the needs of the trainee and the department.

The post holder will also be expected to be involved in the delivery of care in Obstetrics and Gynaecology out of hours, on the 1:8 third tier resident on call rota.

Working for our organisation

The trust consists of two campuses: Nottingham City Hospital and Queen's Medical Centre both have a purpose built Maternity Unit, comprising of a labour ward with co-located Midwife led unit and two wards accommodating both antenatal and postnatal women.

There are additional services and diagnostic facilities including an antenatal day assessment unit, triage, fetal medicine clinics, pre-term birth clinics and twin clinics at both campuses.

There are separate maternal medicine, diabetes and endocrine clinics across both sites. NUH delivered 7462 babies in 2022/2023.

The main referral hospitals for fetal and maternal medicine problems are Mansfield (King's Mill), Lincoln, Boston and Grantham. Between them, these deliver more than 9000 women. Referrals come from Derby for paediatric surgical, neurosurgical and paediatric nephrology cases. Referrals for cases of suspected facial cleft come from most of the Trent region. QMC is the only provider of a fetal blood transfusion service in the East Midlands.

The busy fetal-maternal medicine unit consists of a well-developed team of subspecialists (four sub-specialists are predominantly based at QMC and one at City) in a dedicated clinical area with one or two clinics running every day of the week and regular MDT meetings with clinical genetics and neonatal team on a weekly basis.
