Main responsibilities Provide mammogram examinations for both screening and symptomatic clients.

Participate in the Breast Imaging Services staff rotation both on the mobile units, static units and within the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Make decisions about variable physical characteristics of a clients anatomical breast shape in order to achieve the best possible mammogram.

Positively promote breast awareness.


Rapidly asses the emotional needs of a client through verbal and non-verbal communication Be able to communicate complex information and possibly negotiate in a calm and professional manner with clients who may be angry or distressed.

Communicate effectively with other Assistant Practioners when supervising screening clinics to ensure smooth and efficient running of the breast clinic.

Partake in Assistant Practioner led screening clinics on the mobile screening trailers with remote radiographer supervision.

Undertake all clinical duties required to a high professional and technical standard of work in conjunction with qualified Radiographers, who will provide advice and supervision where required.


Work independently in the x-ray room, to problem solve minor equipment faults and address the womens concerns with regards to cancer or radiation dangers.

Be aware of own technical recall rate (percentage of films technically inadequate and need repeating) and evaluate against the NHSBSP guidelines which recommend less than 2%.

Any variation should be addressed as professional development. Assist with Radiography Assistant duties as required.

Assist Consultant Radiographers and Radiologist with Ultrasound and Ultrasound procedures. Undertake quality control tests on digital mammography equipment and record result accurately. Use professional judgement to interpret QA test results and evaluate when to seek advice.

Job Purpose To work in the Breast Screening and Assessment Centre based at the RVI and in the community on breast screening trailers.


In collaboration with the Superintendent Radiographer, to provide a screening, assessment and symptomatic service whilst helping to sustain and develop effective working relationships in close collaboration with professional colleagues.

To undertake screening and symptomatic mammograms to the standard of the National Health Breast Screening Programme.

With appropriate training, this includes highly skilled mammography procedures on women referred for further examinations to assist in accurate diagnosis.

To take the lead in the efficient and effective running of screening clinics out in the community with indirect supervision from a State Registered Radiographer.
