Description
Job Advert

This is an opportunity for a Senior or Principal Radioactive Waste Consultant to join our talented and growing national Nuclear Division.

Recognising the importance of developing and implementing robust, optimised and cost effective waste and decommissioning strategies, we have immediate and exciting opportunities working closely with a number of client organisations in the new build, operational and decommissioning sub-sectors.

We have worked hard to develop trusted and close working relationships with these clients, who come to us for strategic advice and delivery of critical elements of their programmes.

We are looking to find talented and motivated people to expand our team, and to help support and lead radioactive waste management and decommissioning projects.

You will be based in our Glasgow office working alongside a wide representation of Hydrock's other services and disciplines.

We work flexibly and are moving to hybrid-working, so you can balance your time and commitments in a way that works for both you and Hydrock.

However, we are really focused on hiring great people, so would be open to discussing a range of options in terms of geographic location and split of time in offices.

We offer our staff the opportunity to work with clients and to develop skills and professional networks, whilst helping us deliver our vision of being at the forefront of the UK's new nuclear programme.

We pride ourselves on empowering staff and supporting them to develop their own niche within our growing team.

Our work focuses on developing close and mutually beneficial relationships with our clients and then delivering strategic and impactful outputs tailored to their needs.

We don't typically place staff on long-term secondments as we understand that developing as a consultant requires exposure to a range of work and clients.

We also encourage and support our staff to develop their wider consultancy skills covering everything from commercial awareness, business development and work winning, staff development and more.

However, we know everyone is different, so we focus on hiring great people and working with them to find the roles that support their skills and ambitions.

What you'll be responsible for
Some of your primary responsibilities will include the following (not necessarily from the start):

  • Helping to manage and deliver radioactive waste management and decommissioning packages of work, including overseeing and supporting our delivery teams;
  • Continuing to build and develop excellent client relationships; this is where we have excelled and our clients have all expressed their appreciation of our approach to relationship building;
  • Delivering highquality and bespoke technical and strategic support to our clients;
  • Supporting the continued development of our business, including through identifying, bidding for and winning new work, either with new or existing clients;
  • Mentoring and developing our graduates and other junior staff.
We know that every individual has different skills, strengths and preferences.

We focus on recruiting great people and provide them with opportunities to tailor the role to best fit their skills and experience.

Therefore, the bullets above are indicative but we avoid defining rigid roles.

What skills and attributes are we looking for?

The work we deliver for our clients in support of radioactive waste management spans the entire waste management lifecycle, in which we provide bespoke strategic advice to ensure the UK's radioactive waste management inventory is managed safely.

This ranges from finding innovative solutions to manage a particular waste stream, to developing business cases which could change national policy and strategy.

The common focus being the ability to understand a problem and work out solutions to specific client needs.

  • Understanding of:_
  • UK regulatory and policy landscape for the management of radioactive waste, including recent developments in policy and strategy;
  • The UK Radioactive Waste Inventory, including different classifications and waste streams.
  • Knowledge of:_
  • The range of decommissioning strategies for reactor sites and other nuclear facilities;
  • Waste management processes across the entire lifecycle: characterisation, retrieval, processing, treatment, packaging, and disposal.
  • Experience of:_
  • Working with UK Site License Companies and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (including its subsidiaries).
  • Other skills and experience which we would consider beneficial to a consultancy role with us in:_
  • Experience of working with waste producers (e.g. Magnox, Sellafield, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd. (DSRL), and EDF Energy);
  • Experience working with Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) and its various work programmes;
  • Knowledge of international waste management and disposal practices;
  • Experience of working within multidisciplinary teams and with communication with other technical disciplines;
