Description

Come and join the Milton Keynes chapter of Read Easy UK - a charity for improving the literacy of adults, run exclusively by volunteers.

The Role:

We are recruiting a second Coordinator to help us help more people The role of Coordinator joins up adults who want to learn to read, with people who want to teach them and supports them along their journey.

As the first point of contact for those who want to learn to read, the Coordinator will explain to a potential new 'Reader' how Read Easy may be able to help them.

Using a simple assessment to establish reading ability the Coordinator can evaluate how well the Read Easy approach will work for them and where appropriate, match with a coach and then support the pair on their learning journey.

The Logistics:

This is a volunteer role (unpaid), based at home with local travel (to meet readers/coaches) and we are looking for someone based in (or willing to cover) the East half of Milton Keynes.

Time commitment of the role is flexible between 12 and 24 hours a week, spread over Monday-Friday. Training will be provided along with induction, guidance and support.

The Person:

We are a small friendly group and we are looking for someone who is as passionate as us about reading and helping others learn to read.

The right person will have good communication and people skills whilst respecting the need for confidentiality; good self-awareness, personal responsibility and a professional approach.

It is really important that our Coordinator is organised with good time management, IT and record keeping skills too. If this sounds like you then we would love to hear from you

Why? Adult literacy is a bigger problem than you might think with around 5 million people having a reading age of less than 11 years old. It is often a hidden problem that isolates people and whilst they often develop coping skills, means they miss out on many life opportunities that you and I take for granted. Read Easy is here to help these adults. For an insight, Jay Blades (presenter on The Repair Shop) used Read Easy to learn to read so that he could read a bed-time story to his daughter - you can find a summary of the BBC's "Learning To Read At 51" on youtube.
