Role Purpose:

Undertake audits of the Crime Recording System and Incident Recording System to ensure compliance with National Crime Recording Standards, National Standard for Incident recording and Home Office Counting Rules


Key Responsibilities:


  • Work with the Deputy Crime & Incident Registrar (DC&IR) to agree the terms of reference, methodology, plan and schedule for audit work.
  • Conduct audits in accordance with crime data audit manual in order to identify which of the force's systems and processes are producing ethical and consistent crime and incident recording.
  • Notify the DC&IR of any unethical crime recording practices that undermine the Force's statutory obligation, professional reputation, service to victims of crime and compliance with the Code of Ethics.
  • To report audit findings and identify good practice and risks to crime data accuracy and make recommendations for improvement. Actively engage to disseminate and assist in the interpretation of audit results by presenting audits to the relevant audience.
  • Work with the Designated Decision Maker (DDM) / Analyst in order that audit results can be analysed in order to identify good practice and areas for improvement.
  • To promote and improve understanding within the force of the importance of accurate crime recording.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, support and advice for all individuals, involved in the crime recording process within the organisation.
  • Act as Designated Decision Maker for crime outcomes, reclassification, cancellation (except Homicide and Rape, which must be undertaken by someone who has attained national accreditation).
  • Provide a service to all force staff as a resource to make updates and changes to records held on the crime recording database in accordance with NCRS and HOCR.
  • Performs such other duties as reasonably correspond to the general character of the post and are commensurate with its level of responsibility.

Skills and experience:


Knowledge of NSIR, NCRS, HOCR, Criminal Law, Police incident and crime recording systems, data quality, auditing data records and advanced Microsoft excel.
