The Engineering and Programme team at Calor Gas are looking to recruit an engaging and proactive Terminal Shift Team Lead.


As the Terminal Shift Team Lead you will supervise, co-ordinate, monitor and control activity, resources and plant operations at the terminal leading a shift team of Terminal Technicians, contractors and security staff; deliver safe and efficient control and operation of the Terminals assets and process plant to meet supply of LPG as required by the business.

Ensure the plant is made available for maintenance while minimising operational impacts.


The Terminal Shift Lead will be required to respond to plant operating conditions, faults and alarms, site security and emergency situations ensuring proper control is maintained and demonstrating compliance with Terminal Operating Procedures, Safety Procedures, Emergency Plans and KPI reporting requirements.

You will act as site Incident Controller in the event of an Emergency.


You will implement the Terminals Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Work system and act as Process Controller & Issuing Authority to ensure that all the activities at the Terminal are undertaken safely and in accordance with relevant procedures and risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).

Canvey terminal is the largest facility in the UK able to import and export refrigerated propane.


Operations include the loading and unloading of LPG cargo from ships, management of refrigerated LPG storage and export of high-pressure LPG by pipeline and by filling of road tankers.

This is a shift role ensuring operational availability 24/7, 365 days a year.


Key responsibilities will include:


  • Maintain high standards on the site ensuring operations are compliant with all plant operation and SHE procedures and Calor Specifications
  • Supervise, monitor & control site terminal operations and activity on the LPG plant, marine jetty and associated equipment, pressure systems, cryogenic plant, and utility systems including steam, nitrogen, and compressed air; as required. This includes but is not limited to plant operation, routine maintenance & inspection; assisting in all site delivery of projects, workplace audits, commissioning, complex fault investigation; and to ensure safety, optimal performance and cost effectiveness.
  • Act as the shift Process Controller and Issuing Authority for the Terminal Permit to Work system, ensuring a safe system of work is established for each work site and all relevant activities; ensure delivery of safe isolation process, completing safety from the system inspections, the demarcation of all equipment that is to be removed from service and ensure it is undertaken in an auditable manner, both safely and according to Calors policy and procedures. Review and approve operating and work procedures, risk assessments & method statements (RAMS).
  • Supervise utilisation of terminal stock inventories to meet business demand and scheduling requirements. Accurately monitor and report on stock position to relevant stakeholders as required.
  • In collaboration with the Production Lead ensure shift team members are appropriately trained, competent and are flexible to meet current and future workload requirements.
  • Ensure data recording and accuracy is appropriate and complete to support accurate management and regulatory reporting KPI's.
  • Line management responsibilities for the direct reports (Terminal Operators). Ensuring all objectives are met. Manage shift patterns, ER related issues and service delivery.
  • Supervise all Contractor workforce ensuring the delivery of maintenance and/or site operations.
  • Provide onsite incident supervision and investigation in adherence with Calor policy and procedures in response to incidents, emergencies and reports requiring escalation. Act as a single point of contact for all emergency services.
  • Monitor contractor activity on site to ensure work is delivered safely and to appropriate standards of performance and in accordance with Calor policy and procedures.
  • Be proactive in all aspects of site operations and maintenance, communicating with the Production Lead and Maintenance Lead to support and enable satisfactory completion to plan and to maintain business performance targets.
  • Keep up to date with operational and site maintenance records detailing all work activities and operations undertaken.
  • Be responsible for the process isolations prior to safe setting to work of employees or contractors and carryout the role of site contact under the terminals Safe System of Work and Permit to Work procedures.
