We are looking for forward thinking security professionals to join our the Cyber Security team within the Security and Information Management Division at the Office for National Statistics (ONS).


The last few years has seen an extensive overhaul of security and information management to meet the challenges of corporate and statistics transformation in technology, methods and practice, the Digital Economy Act and organisational risk appetite.

The capability is evolving and expanding to address changes in threat and business direction.

The ideal Cyber Security Monitoring & Threat Principal will lead the Cyber Security Monitoring and Cyber Security Vulnerability teams.

As part of this role, you will:

  • Review high-priority or high-complexity analysis of security event data to manage security incident response, making key decisions on reporting or escalations for monitoring
  • Lead complex information systems to understand and prioritise actions on Cyber Security risks, audit requirements and data value, and provide specialist or complex guidance to vulnerability management teams and external senior stakeholders
  • Establish a detailed understanding of ONS data security and architectures enabling the delivery of a consistent security advice.
  • Develops ONS security policies and procedures to meet the corporate, regulatory and legal requirements
  • Reports critical security incidents to the Head of Security Operations
  • Builds successful working relationships with key stakeholders to improve the security of ONS
The focus, outcomes and responsibilities are aligned to the Government Security Profession Framework - Monitoring role at Principal level.


Person specification
You will need a willingness to work towards or obtain relevant professional qualifications and memberships:

  • Working towards or have obtained, relevant professional membership e.g. practitioner level within the CESG Certified Professional scheme (CCP).
  • Working towards or have obtained, professional development qualifications within specialist Security discipline e.g. Certified Ethical Hacker, ISO 27001 Security Auditor etc.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of assisting with security advice and technical security solutions.
  • Experience of using a variety of sources of information to identify, analyse and report on incidents and events.
  • Experienced in supporting and managing team in a multidiscipline environment.
