Job description:


The IOPC is on a journey to develop its culture, perspectives and ethos to support the organisation's core outcomes and this is your opportunity to enter into the varied world of IOPC Investigations, allowing you to develop your mindset and approaches to contribute to improving the police complaints system in England and Wales.

The IOPC exists to investigate complaints fairly and thoroughly. The IOPC has the power to initiate, carry out and oversee investigations. It is also responsible for monitoring the way complaints are handled by local police forces.


The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is responsible for receiving covert referrals from forces across England and Wales and making appropriate mode of investigation decisions.

For those investigations determined as directed, supervised or managed the ACU will continue to oversee these.

As part of the Directorate of Major Investigations (DMI), the post holder will be part of a small team of Lead Investigators within the ACU.

You will support the development of the ACU in its purpose and growth as it adapts to meet the challenges of new legislation whilst engaging with internal and external stakeholders.


As a Lead Investigator you will join a dynamic investigations team working nationally and reporting directly to an Operations Team Leader.

You will be responsible for delivering high quality investigations in a period of significant change for the IOPC.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Delivery of high quality and robust covert investigations whilst demonstrating our core values into every aspect of the role.
  • Driven to developing yourself to achieve personal and organisational objectives
  • Demonstrating independence and discretion in order to meet and overcome challenges encountered within covert investigations.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders engaged with the investigation of corruption in accordance with agreed IOPC guidelines.
  • Develop the capability to direct covert corruption investigations or alternative MOI in corruption matters under investigation.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure Terms of Reference and investigative strategies are proportionate and necessary to the allegations under investigation.
  • Ensure that information provided to the IOPC is stored and managed in line with IOPC Policy and Security Standards.
  • Reporting to your Operations Team Leader on investigation progress, areas of risk and resourcing requirements.
  • Being prepared to work unsociable and extended hours.
  • Visiting incident scenes and supervising scene management where required to ensure that all necessary action is taken to preserve and recover evidence.
