Here at De La Rue we have an opportunity for a Head of Technology Research to join our Research and Imaging department working with our Chief Scientist to research, identify and evaluate novel or emerging authentication technology platforms which address current or future business need and that are aligned with the technical vision of the business.

This role will be responsible for developing, utilising, and maintaining a cross-platform technology matrix that evaluates new and existing technologies or products against a common set of value metrics, whilst also establishing a research roadmap which both organises the technology options into a coherent set of functional themes as well as sets out future research initiatives or projects, key milestones, and all associated funding.


This is a full time and permanent role to be based from our site in Viables with the opportunity for hybrid and flexible working.


_What will you be doing?_

  • With technical oversight and direction from the Chief Scientist building and maintain a detailed and structured view of the evolving technology landscape (relevant to product authentication) with particular emphasis on emerging science or technologies that do not feature in existing business development roadmaps or competitor product offerings.
  • To explore, document and codify the research activity in a systematic and organised manner way by utilising a set of common metrics to assess the relative strengths of each technology, potential barriers to adoption, disruptive potential & strategic fit.
  • To conduct ongoing technology scouting.
  • To conduct "deep dive" or focussed assessment of selected technology areas or partners as requested by Chief scientist culminating in technology report, presentation white papers. This assessment should encompass functionality, potential barriers to adoption including development and manufacturing challenge.
  • To develop a Research roadmap which seeks to consolidate of the learnings and outcomes from the technology evaluation matrix, scouting activity and deep dive assessments into several themes or initiatives that can be taken forward in the form of feasibility or prototyping (MVP) projects.
  • To build a budget that underpins the Research roadmap activity looking at least 3 years out.
  • To either lead or undertake all necessary activity including business case, required capital expenditure, third part development agreements needed to take specific research initiatives from the ideation phase through to proofofconcept prototype suitable for handover to the development team as well as ensuring necessary 3rd party licensing is in place. It is assumed this activity will comprise a mix of internal "organic" activity alongside external partnership to optimise De La Rue IP opportunities and value add.
  • Where a project is to be handed over to the product development team develop mutually agreed success criteria, hand over documentation, information, and training support.
  • To develop thirdparty technology license or development agreements that protect De La Rues existing intellectual property, maximises new IP opportunities as well as provide clear success criteria for all payment milestones.

What qualifications, experience and skills are we looking for?

  • Graduate or above physics, chemistry, material science, or related engineering discipline.
  • Must demonstrate industrial experience in bringing product to market either through a focus on technical Research or Product development activity
  • Understanding of the processes involved in the delivery of projects or subprojects with evidence of delivering to challenging timescales and under pressure
  • Understands, or has the capacity to learn the science involved in one or more areas of scientific focus to support the De La Rue product ranges.
  • Practical knowledge and experience of projects relating to our markets in Authentication or Currency would be an advantage.
