The ISIS Target Design Group has an immediate requirement for an experienced senior design and analysis engineer with specialist knowledge in complex mechanical systems to manage the design, development, simulation and procurement of its scientific researchequipment.

Design and analysis of target station components and systems is a key element in supporting the user community carrying out scientific studies at the ISIS facility, and there is an active programme of development of these systems as part of a widerfacility growth.

This opportunity will see you join the Target Design Group, operating at the heart of ISIS's Design Division.

You would work closely and collaborate with leading scientists, engineers and technicians in the field and work on a breadth of novel technologiesand to specify, design, simulate, develop, procure and test bespoke mechanical components and systems for some highly challenging environments.

These could include but are not limited to cryogenic neutron moderators, neutron producing targets, proton beamwindows, fluid systems and supporting mechanical structures.

You will be involved in full lifecycle engineering from concept to commissioning of one-off components and larger, sophisticated systems.

As a senior part of a dynamic and responsive engineeringteam, you will lead the development of high tech engineering solutions.


The post holder's duties would include:

  • Play a leading role in design teams, with coordination between different disciplines
  • Actively managing priorities of own work and your staff's work against technical board priorities
  • Provide technical support and advice to other specialists in the division and department
  • Managing the design and analysis of complex components and systems
  • Carrying out appropriate analysis of the systems
  • Presentation of designs and results for peer and stakeholder review
  • Line manage staff
  • Be responsible for training and developing early careers staff
  • Managing procurement and delivery of approved designs
  • Ensuring all engineering design and analysis is carried out safely and in accordance with required codes of practice
  • Production of technical reports and safety assessments

Person Specification
The below criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I)

  • Significant postgraduate experience in the design including experience in working in multidisciplinary teams. (S&I)
  • Significant postgraduate experience in carrying out engineering simulation and analysis (mechanical, thermomechanical and computational fluid dynamics) (S&I)
  • Proven ability to analyse, design and deliver systems from first principles. (I)
  • Proven ability to work to procedures, and Industrial Standards and Regulations. (S&I)
  • Understanding of safe design, risk assessments, and risk mitigation. (S&I)
  • Comprehensive understanding of materials and manufacturing. (S&I)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work collaboratively and constructively in multidisciplinary project delivery environments. (S&I)
