This opportunity sits in Supply Chain Operations (SCO), a division of Route Services that procures safe, sustainable, products and services that are in turn used to improve and enhance the rail infrastructure across Britain.

Every year we:


  • Buy and deliver 2,000km of rail and 2.5 million tonnes of ballast.
  • Operate 1,200 rail vehicles.

Behind the scenes we:


  • Process £7,000,000,000 of payments.
  • Handle over 23,000 IT helpdesk calls.

Every year:


  • Mechanical and electrical locking fitters maintain 468 signal boxes and 387 ground frames.
  • Operational property helpdesk process over 200,000 calls.

Main Responsibilities
This role sits within the Signalling, Telecoms, Electrification and Fixed Plant commodity in Supply Chain Operations.


This role will include various activities including post contract/suppler management a bank of suppliers within these categories, monitoring the throughput of spend from our various customers maintenance, minor works, and projects to ensure they are supported from a time and cost element within our frameworks and working with our Commercial& Procurement team to support this.


In addition, you will be working with cross functions in SCO inventory and Operations, SCO Projects and with the wider Route Service Organisation with various business stakeholders which include Routes and Regions, SCO Projects Supply Chain Team, and the Technical Authority Engineering Teams.


Having a procurement/commercial/ project or supply chain management background is highly desirable to enable an element of "hit the ground running" within the team.

It's a fast-paced role and having a flexible approach, being a good problem solver and a high customer focus alongside working with numbers and data ( which is needed) goes a long way.


Elements of travel will be required in this post to visit suppliers but having a hybrid approach to work at NR we can facilitate some of these through TEAMS, but its important for you to have a good relationship with your suppliers and customers alike which often only that human interaction supports.


You will be responsible for managing a range of key projects across your department to deliver improvements to both safety and operational performance.

No two days will be the same, but a typical day could include facilitating project meetings with internal stakeholders as well as external suppliers, providing progress updates to senior managers or completing governance documentation required for upcoming panel submissions.


  • Manage supply contracts to achieve the most cost effective delivery of goods and services.
  • Engage with and support internal and external stakeholders to understand future business strategies and support delivery of an uptodate supply and demand plan
  • Manage effective relationships with customers and suppliers and deliver daytoday supplier relationship management for nominated specialist areas.
  • Provide management information to the business, as required.
  • Assist in the design, introduction and operation of relevant process management systems
  • Hold regular contract management meetings with key stakeholders, suppliers and customers to identify tangible improvements in value and service levels
  • Manage the collection, review, analysis and support of category and supplier data for particular categories, to support the development of innovative category strategies. Advise the supply chain on alternative suppliers.
  • Identify and implement quality and efficiency improvement initiatives

Will have the following:

  • Knowledge of the supply chain and the relevant supply contracts.
  • Experience of contract and supplier management.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills.
  • Commercial and negotiation skills.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisational skills.
