JOB TITLE:
KITCHEN ASSISTANT
REPORTS TO:
Pre-School and Nursery Manager/Deputy Manager
JOB PURPOSE:
The kitchen assistant will be working within the setting of
St Michael's Church Pre-School and Nursery for children
between the ages of 0 and 5 years, planning and preparing their snacks, lunch and tea.
MAIN DUTIES:
- To be responsible for stock control and the purchase of food and provisions for the Nursery.
- To be responsible for reviewing tea menus on a termly basis, in line with our policies.
- To follow the necessary dietary/allergy requirements for the setting.
- To prepare and co-ordinate the serving of snack.
- To serve lunch (this is provided by an external company).
- During lunch time to help staff supervise children and help with feeding.
- To prepare and co-ordinate the serving of tea.
- To wash-up crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils. Wash floors with appropriate frequencies.
- To be responsible for health, safety and hygiene, etc. within the kitchen area, when storing, preparing and disposing of food.
- Keep all surfaces and appliances clean and hygienic, in accordance with Environmental Health standards.
- Keep a check on and re-order all necessary cleaning materials for kitchen and Nursery.
- Dispose of rubbish in an appropriate manner.
- Other duties will include laundry and covering staff for breaks.
- To effectively safeguard and protect children within the Pre-School and Nursery. To follow the policy and procedure for safeguarding children.
- To implement the Pre-School and Nursery Policies and Procedures.
- Attend meetings as and when required.
- Keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is learnt as part of the job.
- Attend relevant external meetings and training courses as directed by the Pre-School and Nursery Manager or Management Committee. (Approved course fees will be met by the committee).
- Advise Pre-School and Nursery Manager of any matters requiring attention, i.e. concerns about a child or equipment needing repair or replacement.
- To work consistently with the ethos, which is set out in the Constitution and Team Charter.
QUALITIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - Kitchen Assistant
Essential Criteria
- Experience of planning and preparing meals for over 40 individuals.
- Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.
- This role does require a Enhanced DBS check
- Experience of working in a commercial kitchen.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work flexibly in a creative child-centred environment.
- Ability to work positively and communicate effectively with children, parents, other staff and professionals, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Enthusiasm for working with children.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in working in a Day Nursery or Pre-School.
- Direct experience of inspections by external agencies i.e. Environmental Health, and Ofsted.

- Salary £11.00 per hour (reviewed yearly)
- Setting is closed on bank holidays and between Christmas and New Year
Salary:
£11.00 per hour
Expected hours: 37.5 per week
