Due to further investment in the Stroke SLT service at NUH we now have an additional Band 7 SLT permanent post on the Stroke unit.

The post holder is responsible for providing highly specialist SLT assessment, formulation and diagnosis, requiring advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and interpretation and analysis, and subsequent therapy/management programmes within the designated specialism

The post holder may also lead on strategic developments within their specialism, in liaison with their line manager and working together with the other band 7 Stroke SLTs

The post-holder will also lead on the development and delivery of training and professional mentorship in their specialism.

The post holder will provide highly specialist clinical expertise and team leadership within specialism

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work alongside other Band 7 SLTs in the NUH Stroke team. There are also Band 6 and Band 5 SLTs in team, and also SLT assistant support.

The Stroke service at NUH operates across both City and QMC and the Band 7s have designated responsibility for team leadership, clinical focus on acute Stroke, or a clinical focus on inpatient stroke rehab, on a rotational basis.

There is a FEES and VF service.

There are strong links with the Stroke MDT and opportunity for participation in task and finish groups, training delivery, and inter-disciplinary CPD.

There will be a requirement for some weekend working as part of this post.

Working for our organisation

  • NUH is a large teaching hospital, across 2 sites: Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital. The Adult SLT service works across both sites, working alongside a separate ENT service. We work across a very broad range of acute specialties including Healthcare of the older person, Respiratory, and Critical Care. NUH host a number of regional services including Neurosciences unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke unit, Trent Cardiac centre, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. We also have SLTs within the Neurorehabilitation unit, the MDT neurorehabilitation outpatient services, and an SLT service for Neurology outpatients.

Service delivery
To work autonomously to provide a coordinated and highly specialist service to designated specialism within a multi-disciplinary/multi-agency context and inform and advise the service leads as to training, resources, trends and development needs

To work collaboratively with a variety of different agencies/professionals ensuring management and treatment meets the holistic needs, providing a well co-ordinated care plan for specialism/setting

To represent the Speech and Language Therapy service at agreed forums

To represent speech, language and communication and/or dysphagia needs at agreed forums

To participate in multi
- disciplinary projects as agreed.


Clinical Practice
To independently manage, triage and prioritise own complex caseload providing a highly specialist SLT assessment, formulation, diagnosis, intervention and advice based on evidence based practice

To develop and provide highly specialist packages of care to individuals working as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team across a variety of agencies and locations

To mentor, supervise, teach and develop SLT colleagues and other professionals within area of expertise

To effectively delegate to assistant SLT, administrative and other staff.


Clinical Governance
To proactively contribute to regional / national RCSLT Clinical Excellence Groups and Hubs as well as other relevant groups

To maintain and demonstrate own CPD, keeping up to date with clinical developments & current research and evidence-based practice to ensure own and others practice is safe and effective

To contribute to team objectives and clinical governance activities of the Trust, reflecting local and national priorities


To be responsible for planning, provision, monitoring and evaluation of programmes of learning and development to family/carers, paid carers and professionals as appropriate.

To provide highly specialist clinical expertise, advice and support including second opinions, supervision and clinical training to SLT colleagues to promote a high standard of clinical management

To ensure that quality standards and systems of quality assurance and monitoring are implemented in order to continually improve service delivery
