Description

The post-holder will receive, assist, and direct patients in accessing medication services in a professional, courteous, efficient and effective way.

Adherence to practice protocols is paramount to ensure the timely preparation of medication requests, either via EPS or manual arrangements.


Provision of general assistance to the practice team including national contract recall, innovate digitally and the ability to project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors either in person or via the telephone.


  • To identify and work closely with all healthcare professionals involved in medicine management in the practice.
  • To reduce waste, minimise risk and improve the repeat prescribing process.
  • To improve prescription security by introducing best practice guidelines.
  • To be responsible for ensuring recall systems are in place, and are effective for the correct monitoring of amber drugs and those included in the enhanced services of the national and local contracts.
  • To undertake practice based project work under the direction of the management team and GP partners to ensure cost savings on the prescribing budget.
  • To undertake proactive "housekeeping" management of the repeat prescribing process in accordance with practice protocols.
  • To deal with all, nonclinical medication queries that require follow up and problem solving techniques.
  • Identify patients who would be suitable for repeat dispensing and pharmacy Medication Use Reviews.
  • To ensure information from pharmacy MURs is acted upon as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement medicines management initiatives through the work of the practice e.g. repeat dispensing.
  • Development and implementation of practice policies and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Act as the first point of contact both within the practices and for outside agencies, including secondary care, community pharmacists, nursing home staff and other healthcare professionals who have queries relating to prescriptions.
  • Liaise with patients to receive prescription requests, address their queries and provide medicines management advise.
  • To train and provide guidance to practice staff regarding medicines management.
  • To supervise and train practice staff undertaking generation of repeat prescriptions and to explain and inform them of any prescribing changes being carried out.
  • To facilitate medicine management meetings within the practice.
  • To organise the data collection and searches required for all audits being carried out for medicines management priorities (any prescribing incentive schemes and CCG projects) and ensure they are submitted on time.
  • To ensure the processing of repeat medication requests is compliant with practice protocol and targets
  • Respond to all queries and requests for assistance from patients and other visitors
  • Ensure that the all duties and tasks undertaken comply with the Practice Policies and Practice Handbook and contribute to the monitoring and review of said documents including identification of amendments and anomalies.
  • To understand and comply with Practice Safeguarding Procedure undertaking and supporting the policy and maintaining relevant training standard required.
