An exciting opportunity has arisen for you to join our service as an Infant Feeding Advisor working as part of our Healthy Child Programme Infant Feeding Team.

The post is located in Peterborough and will also cover an area from Yaxley, Whittlesey, Wisbech / Fenland and Huntingdonshire.


Ideally you will have a current qualification as an IBCLC qualified lactation consultant, Breast Feeding Counsellor, Level 3 UNICEF Infant Feeding Training or have clinical experience in the area of Infant Feeding.

You must be able to evidence your skill and experience in supporting breastfeeding mothers and demonstrate excellent communication skills. You must also be confident in working without direct supervision.


The area you will be covering is geographically wide and there will be times when you are requested to cover for another member of your team, therefore you must be prepared to travel to other areas within the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough boundaries.

The post holder will be required to work as part of the Health Visiting Infant Feeding Team.

You will be expected to facilitate our Infant Feeding drop-in sessions, deliver Introducing Family Foods Workshops and must demonstrate confidence and skill in offering 1:1 support to breastfeeding mothers.


You will be required to support the Infant Feeding Lead in auditing both our staff and service users, in order to maintain our UNICEF Baby Friendly Level 3 Accreditation.

You will also be expected to support the delivery of up-to-date, evidence-based Infant Feeding Training for our staff.

  • To assist the caseload holder in the management and delivery of care to clients autonomously.
  • To contribute to the process for ensuring that staff are kept up to date with clinical changes and research within Infant Feeding and to support maintaining Level 3 UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation.
  • To contribute to the process by which information from the Department of Health, East of England and other organisations is disseminated.
  • To deal with situations where he/she will need to assess events, problems or patient condition in detail to determine an appropriate course of action. An example of this may be assessing a breast feed and formulating a plan to address any issues. To promote the continuation of breastfeeding and make appropriate referrals as necessary.
  • To support the Infant Feeding Lead to provide and receive information where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, empathetic or reassurance skills are required.
  • To support the Infant Feeding Lead in the planning and delivery of public health activities including initiatives to raise the profile of breastfeeding within the county of Cambridgeshire. To assist with the production of display materials to promote infant feeding and the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.
  • To contribute to ensuring that robust data collection mechanisms are used and developed further as needed. To regularly scrutinise/audit available data to determine progress against targets.
  • To listen appropriately and take into account any sensitive issues. To communicate these to the appropriate persons/agencies ensuring that children are protected and that disclosures are acted upon immediately.
  • To demonstrate, teach and facilitate the management of breastfeeding to the client, giving support as necessary.
  • To take an active role in Health Education of the individual and community. Undertaking opportunistic health promotion based upon evidence based practice
  • To be responsible for own caseload planning.
  • To accurately and contemporaneously record all patient contacts on SystmOne. Ensuring that patient and professional confidentiality are maintained at all times as per Trust Policy.
  • To contribute to the planning, development, implementation and review of the service from the client's perspective.
  • Any other reasonable duties as directed by the Infant Feeding Lead.
