DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION


Channel 4's Broadcast Technology Management function sits within Technology Strategy & Operations which also incorporates Architecture, Information Security and IT Service Management.

The Head of Department reports into the Technology Director.
JOB PURPOSE


This role is responsible for supporting the operational planning and execution of live and as-live programming initiatives and co-ordinating the technical and operational element of live programming.

Including issuing the Operational notes, connectivity overview, operational contacts and co-ordinating the non-linear and VOD operational requirements. This role will support the Broadcast Operations Support Engineer in technical meetings and live contribution connectivity requirements.

  • This role will be required to work closely with our outsource partners and outside broadcast production partners, peer level within C4 and managers within the broader Strategy and Technology group so as to successfully deliver the linear broadcast live function.
  • Responsible for disseminating key operational and technical knowledge across the Broadcast Operations team and ensuring there is depth and continuity to live programming operations.
  • The role will represent Broadcast Technology Management in supplier governance meetings across linear services, media services and distribution. The role will represent BTM in production and technical meetings with production companies and OBs.
    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Planning, executing, and performing operational due diligence for live broadcast projects.
  • Represent the BTM function in relevant external meetings with suppliers, clients, and other broadcasters.
  • To provide operational support to the Broadcast Distribution function.
  • Representation of the Broadcast Operations function in relevant external meetings with suppliers, clients, and other broadcasters.
  • To undertake administrative and support tasks as appropriate.
  • Training and knowledge sharing within the Broadcast Operations team.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
Technical & Professional Skills

  • Must have a significant amount of handson experience in Broadcast and Media technology and operations workflows, preferably in a tier one broadcaster.
  • Must have the ability to consider multiple, individually complex operational problems in a holistic manner when deciding a course of action.
  • Must have experience of and demonstrate some capabilities in supplier relationship management.
  • Must have experience of live programmes and events, either from the Broadcaster, Broadcast services supplier or Production side.
  • Experience of Media Services and Distribution operations desirable.
Autonomy/Judgement/Decision Making

  • Works under directions from the Broadcast Operations Manager but exercises operational independence using discretion and taking calculated risks where appropriate.
  • Guidance from the Broadcast Operations Manager is sought when the role is unable to resolve issues with suppliers, peers or other areas of the business and they require escalation.
  • Some autonomy over daytoday activities but is expected to work within technology strategies, roadmaps and processes developed in conjunction with the BTM leadership team and the wider C4 technology strategy.
  • Must be able to work within the constraints of limited resources, timescales, and high pace of change.
Managing Resources (People, Budgets, Systems, Projects)

  • Must have a high level of selfmotivation and organisation and demonstrate the ability to work to critical deadlines under pressure.
  • No direct budgetary responsibility but should exercise control and due diligence over the costing of live programmes and remain focused on fiscal prudence.
  • The role includes liaising with key stakeholders in internal Channel 4 departments, and close collaboration with the other areas of the department.
Relationship Management (Internal, External, 3rd parties)

  • Must work closely with the Broadcast Operations Manager and team and wider Technology function, and is focused on developing, maintaining, and influencing key relationships both inside the Channel 4 business and with 3rd parties.
  • Must always present themselves in a professional manner when dealing with both internal and 3rd party stakeholders.
  • Complexity/Problem Solving
  • Will work on complex and cuttingedge Broadcast events requiring analytical thinking and an ability to process and manage multiple business inputs at the same time to devise solutions with suppliers.
