Role Title:
Room Leader


Reporting to:
Nursery Manager


ROLE OVERVIEW:

The room leader/ Third In Charge is responsible for:

  • Ensuring high quality childcare and education is provided in a safe and clean room.
  • Ensuring she/he is a role model for staff including high levels of professionalism and standards of appearance.
  • Coaching, mentoring and supervising the Nursery practitioners within the room ensuring they are fulfilling their roles and responsibilities.
  • Providing support to the Nursery Manager.
  • Carrying out termly supervisions, observations and cohort tracking.
  • Ensuring the Early Years Foundation Stage is embedded and adhered to.
  • Ensuring the room display boards and communication boards are up to date and relevant.
  • Ensuring the Key Person's information is up to date.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


General Duties:


  • To oversee the day to day running of the room
  • To be approachable for parents and staff
  • To be responsible for the care, well-being and safety of all children and staff.
  • To ensure high standards of care and education are maintained.
  • To take an active role within the senior management team.
  • To ensure the base room runs smoothly and is clean, tidy and presentable at all times.
  • To ensure adherence to health and safety policies and practice and ensure risk assessments are completed timely.
  • To ensure all room and Nursery policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • To respect and maintain confidentiality.
  • To inform the Nursery Manager of any problems, children's illnesses and absences.
  • To induct, train, coach, mentor and supervise the Nursery practitioners.
  • To identify training needs.
  • To organise room meetings to ensure good team working and motivation, information sharing and planning.
  • To carry out assessments and cohort tracking.
  • To ensure the children's dietary and allergy needs are met and all staff are aware.
  • To ensure the children's SEND needs are met and all staff are aware.
  • To liaise effectively with the SENDCo.
  • To ensure all concerns regarding safeguarding and child protection are responded to promptly and appropriately following policies and procedures.
  • To lead and develop the team practice with regards to the Early Years Foundation
Stage.


  • To oversee planning, observation and assessment on a regular basis.
  • To communicate effectively with parents and other visitors to the Nursery.
  • To assume responsibility for opening and closing the Nursery as directed by the Nursery
Manager.


  • To provide management cover as directed by the Nursery Manager.
  • To ensure the children's learning needs, likes, interests and next steps are recorded and incorporated into planning.

  • To ensure a wide variety of challenging activities are provided to meet children's interests and next steps in learning.
  • To ensure the procedure of settling in a new child or child who is transitioning, is effective, timely and professional.
  • To ensure messages are passed to the appropriate person and any requests for information are dealt with same day/next day.

Self-Management:


  • Attends training courses to further personal development.
  • Performs any ad hoc duties as required.
  • Actively contributes and participates as part of the team, attending team meetings and other events.
  • Is mindful of personal safety and safety of colleagues
  • Assists the Nursery Manager with initiatives that directly benefit the Nursery.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE:


Essential to role Desirable to role

  • Minimum 2 years' post qualification
    Experience of responsibility for:
  • Minimum Level III or equivalent SEND children
  • Relevant childcare qualifications in Excellent planning and accordance with OFSTED guidelines organisation skills
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of legislation including EYFS
  • Empathetic, caring and friendly
  • Enthusiastic, positive attitude
  • Patient
  • Adept at dealing with stress
  • Proven supervisory and coaching experience

Salary:
From £10.80 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

  • London: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
