Database Administrator (Band 6)

Job Summary


Youll be joining an organisation with ambitious plans to provide cutting edge digital services and to improve our technology services.

You will be able to put your skills in ICT support and service improvement to use, supporting colleagues based throughout the country and in hospitals and other NHS bodies from our Bristol base.


Through your technical and supporting role for NHSBT ICT you will get to interact and work alongside colleagues in Operations, Networks & Security, Systems Development and Applications Support to help deliver outstanding ICT solutions delivery to the customer base.


Every day will be different some days will be working to ensure business as usual is maintained whilst others may be spent on National project implementations.

You will be involved in ensuring suppliers and colleagues are keeping up with their obligations and, at other times, engaging with our agenda for change as detailed in the ICT Strategy Framework.

Main duties of the job

  • In this role you will be responsible for the daytoday availability, maintenance, monitoring and integrity of databases and associated support software held by NHSBT and managed by the Database Technology and Design (DTD) Team.
  • You will also assist in the design and development of existing and new database provision.
  • You will carry out tasks relating to the availability, security, performance and capacity of the database estate, as well as carrying out routine administration tasks such as account management and data amendments.
  • You will work primarily with the SQL Server based elements of NHSBTs database provision.
  • You may, from time to time, be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice
  • You may be required to participate in a 24 hour oncall rota with prior notice

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience in monitoring, supporting and troubleshooting daily operations in an Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server DBA environment
  • Handson experience of administering Microsoft SQL Server servers and databases
  • Knowledge of Windows Desktop and Server editions
  • Experience of producing User and Technical documentation
  • Experience of working with information technology to an advanced level, using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure and server scripting e.g. Unix Shell Scripting, Windows Powershell or batch files would be desirable

Qualifications and Training

  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
  • Possession of a valid driving licence, allowing you to drive in the UK would be desirable
