Project title:
Strengthening communications during patient discharge processes: Improving patient experienced quality of care and patient safety.

The overall aim of this two year programme of research is, with key stakeholders (hospital staff and patients/carers,) to co-design strategies and implement solutions to strengthen communications during patient discharge from Galway University Hospitals (GUH).

This project will use the participatory design method of Experience-Based Co-Design EBCD)

  • Lead (under the supervision of the Principal Investigator) and undertake reviews of the academic and healthcare policy literature
  • Liaise with funders, advisory bodies, and key research stakeholders
  • Undertake and direct an Experience Based Co-Design (EBCD) study and analysis
  • Undertake and direct an evaluation of the study.
  • Undertake and direct the collation of secondary data sources
  • Undertake quantitative data analysis of research findings as required.
  • Recruit and interview stakeholders for aligned qualitative studies
  • Undertake qualitative data analysis of research findings
  • Organise and facilitate group meetings engaging with research stakeholders.
  • Draft reports, scientific papers and contribute to other dissemination activities
  • Contribute to project administrative work to support the programme of research
  • Make presentations at national and international conferences
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post
  • Work collaboratively under the leadership of the project PI and coPIs in all of the above

Qualifications/Skills required:


Essential Requirements:


  • A PhD in Health, Psychology, Nursing or a related discipline
  • Experience of participative qualitative research design and data collection analysis
  • Advanced qualitative analysis skills and experience in using qualitative software such as NVivo.
  • Good publication track record
  • Evidence of independent research track record
  • Ability to work independently and manage a project whilst taking responsibility for project delivery
  • Good interpersonal skills and evidence of effective team working in a research context.

Desirable Requirements:


  • Research project management experience
  • Demonstrated research leadership
  • Experience in conducting research in hospital/healthcare setting
  • Group facilitation skills
  • Experience of writing grant proposals and research supervision
  • Experience in Knowledge Translation approaches with a variety of stakeholders
  • Understanding of health literacy and health communication research
  • Understanding of the EBCD approach.
